REAR AXLE LOWER TRAILING ARM MOUNTS.

Postby j.johnson23 » 30 Apr 2017 16:10

I have been stripping an axle today in prep for a rebuild.
Can only say I was truly horrified to find that both mounts were corroded beyond repair,as were the the stop brackets.
This has made me think that there may be a few of us unwittingly driving around with mounts like this.the rest of the axle is fine with only surface rust and what looks like peeling underseal on it(the root cause?).
I also stripped the lower mount on another axle and that is corroded but not like the first.
The one on the car was last looked at properly in 2012 and was ok then, but I am worried a little as to its condition now even though it has hardly seen the rain.
Tried to post images but the file size is too large on every image, sorry.

This was the one on my car but the axle bracket under it was OK. Luckily I had some good ones on a spare axle but I quite fancy some of the stainless steel ones next time I have it apart.

A good reason to migrate to OZ.

After giving it some thought I think cutting the old off, fabrication of new mounts and using the other axle for reference when fitting is practical.
I would hate for one of us to fall victim to this problem so if it prompts you to check, that's all I ask.

Common issue which we repair on a regular basis. So much so we have the repair sections pre made.

Not o fan of using underseal on suspension components. Use POR-15 instead.

I have been down to see a friend who can knock up the axle brackets quite easily and weld them to the axle.
He asked why the stop bracket is separate as it is bolted on via two 5/16 bolts and the trailing arm bolt, this is a major reason for the corrosion.
I have no idea why it has been done this way,has any on here got an idea?
Thanks for previous replies by the way.

I reconditioned my rear axle some years ago with POR-15. Not looked at them recently, but the last time I did, all looked OK. I do like the idea of the stainless steel ones, but they look rather costly and I am sure they could be fabricated for less than 40 (ish) pounds each. No idea either why they are separate items, but think of it this way, it makes them easier to replace.

Probably something like"shall we redesign these axle mountings?" "No we have ordered loads already, let us design a fix using them.Sorted"Just in jest Steve.
