Gear stick banging up and now

Hello

Slowly working through my TR7 trying to fix all the things that annoy me

You can lift the gearstick up and down and it makes a banging noise. It does it when I drive. Any ideas why it's happening? Is something broken or missing? Any suggestions what to check?

Gearbox extension bushes probably worn or desintegrated :roll:

The cars been stored for years so i imagine loads of rubber is stuffed. My mates got a ramp. I'll take it there.

Yep, never bought a 7 yet that had those extension bushes in place.

While you are under there, have a look at the gearbox mount. It is probably more like jelly than rubber, & check there is a spacer, about 2" diameter, 1" thick between the mount & the box. They are often missing.

Parts ordered today.

I'll check out the gearbox mount too.

Thanks for the advice. Can i do this under the car when the cars on axle stands or ramps or do i need a vehicle lift?

I did it all on axle stands.

Yep.

It helps if you have slim hands, & an eye in the end of your index finger would be handy, but I've done 4 of them that way.

Just did mine last week and found it easier access with the gearbox supported on a jack then you can take the crossmember and propshaft off.

Removing the gearbox cross member certainly helps to provide more working space.
Just make sure you support the gearbox with a stable jack.

All the bits and my new jack are coming today so might have a go this weekend. I am a complete novice so i confess it sounds all a bit daunting. I need to learn though as this was the deal with the Mrs when i bought the car

Couldn't agree more with Hasbeen, learn to do by doing. The job might be fiddly getting the bolts started in limited space but not particularly complex and every body has a first time for every job. I always take pictures before and as I go through a job with an old 1.3 meg camera (you can't take too many) in case you forget how things go, a lesson many here have learned, sometimes multiple times.

I used to have a small notepad and pencil within reach, for making notes and sketches :roll:

I had a book back in the '70's called "How To Fix Your Volkswagon for The Complete Idiot". It had no pictures, just a few hand drawn line images but it could talk you through a complete engine overhaul even if you never turned a wrench. I pulled out the engine on my bug to change the clutch using a jack some two by fours and a few bricks. Previously I had only did brake job and replaced a few torrington starter clutches on my Javelin and some points/plugs/wires on my '71 Javelin. It was done in a conversational tone with amusing anecdotes that made it a good read even is you weren't working on your car. Very special author. Never seen a book like that since.
