Vehicle Identification Plate

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 02 Mar 2017 23:54

A few years ago, the doors on my TR7 were replaced. This was due to the bottom of the old doors going rotten. The new doors were cleaner and would have been a lot less work than trying to fix the old ones. So they were replaced and the old once scrapped.

When the old doors were scrapped, the bits needed were taken off them and they went. At the time I forget to take the Vehicle Number plate off the passengers side door. I have the VIN plate on the turret still, but not the original Vehicle Number plate.

Thankfully the VIN is there. So is there a way that I can locate the Vehicle Number and then get a new plate marked with this number, so I can put it on my car?

To clear this up .... there are three plates on UK cars and 4 on Australia (& some other export) cars the common ones are :

- Frame number (pre fitment of engine and trim)
- Body number (after spraying)
These two are both slim tags and will be found in the engine bay (normally on the turret and front slam panel)

Common again is the VIN plate (variations of this depending on year / factory) - this is a black and silver plate which on early car is on the door (& the one i assume you are missing)

Some export also have an additional plate in the engine bay. TR7 export plate :

Some countries also have a plate near the windscreen with the VIN on it :

I was told by a local that the Australian "TR7 export plate" you reference was fitted here at Zetland in Sydney.

I am not sure of the veracity of this statement.

Yeah that's right, "Compliance plates" are fitted here, cars can't be registered here without one.

Phil,

You should talk to Beans (Theo) about reproducing the missing plate, as he's done amazing work reproducing plates for the resto of his early orange FHC.

That's the correct type of VIN plate for a Canley or Solihull car this side of the pond
But should always be accompanied by a VIN number stamped in the chassis or bodywork (for cars with unitary bodywork)

If it is a later U.K. car afaik it would not normally have a plate on the door though the holes to place the plate may still be present. The VIN plate would go on the turret and the VIN would also be stamped in the gutter at the side of the boot. Afaik some but not necessarily all later cars may have a body number on a small plate adjacent to the fan shroud on the headlight panel. The body number has no direct relation to the VIN. A seemingly unrelated number may be present on the door aperture between the hinges. supercass
