Engine + Gearbox Weight?

Hi,

Looking to get an engine crane, but I have no idea how heavy the engine and gearbox (combined) are.

Don't want to spend more than I have to getting one double the capacity I need.

Can anyone give me a rough figure?

Can' tell you the weight except an engine alone is bl**dy heavy, my son and I struggled lifting one, and if is a 5 speed box that is not light either. (OK, I am an old 13.5 stone weakling but he was only 24). Don't forget that to get the engine out of a TR7 requires a long reach hoist and it has to be capable of taking the load at the reach. This limits the range you can use. Can be useful to look on ebay as people buy them for a single use then sell them on.

I can pick up the 5 speed box by myself. If you figure that the engine is, at most double the gearbox, you probably have a total of about 300 to 350 pounds. The smallest shop crane should easily handle that.

This question has come up before,but I forget the answer. I too can lift the gearbox (it is heavy) but I think Nick is a bit on the light side. I've read somewhere that the MGB engine transmission is around 400 lbs. so I think our combo would be somewhat heavier by 50 to 100 lb. I have a 1/2 ton lift at full extension and the engine/trans seemed bloody heavy lifting it out of a small pickup truck. So a small lift will work, heavier duty ones may be a bit easier to use because they are more robust. When I take the engine/trans out of Yellow TCT I am seriously think of raising front of the car and sliding the engine/trans out on a dolly.

I've seen long reach cranes that can take up to 2 tons, but only 1/2 a ton at their longest extension. From what you've said something with 1/4 a ton at the longest extension should *just about* cover it (assuming I've converted pounds to tons correctly - jump in and correct me if I haven't).

(if the link works) shows the engine weight as 290 lbs (about 0.13 tons), I would guess that is dry weight. The 'box is probably about 80lbs (very much a guess) so total about 0.165 tons. The hoist you note should be OK provided it has a long enough reach to get over the front panel to the engine lift/balance bar point.

Can somebody give me a good indication of the weight and dimensions of a F8b Engine and gearbox, with carby and everything still on it. I would like to know both the engine and gearbox together and seperatly if anyone has the info???

If you squint through almost closed eyes, F8b almost passes as P5b, one of the earliest applications of the Rover V8 in the U.K.
