Definitely one for your bucket list!

Both the TR Register and the TSSC have run trips to the classic in the past, for the best of the action camp at the track but remember to take your wet weather gear.

The classic is run differently to the 24 hour race in that it is really several different races made up of age bands, can be a little dis-jointed at times when the oldest cars are racing and not covered by the big screens that you see for other events.

In my experience of many years of attendance you can get really close to the cars in the paddocks and talk to the teams.

Well worth the adventure but go with all your mates.

Cheers

Hiya,

I drunkely accepted a challenge to get my TR7 back on the road for the 2010 Le Mans Classic and i'm glad i did. The journey there is awesome, so many expensive cars whizzing by, GT40s, Cossies, Ferarris etc etc, you get the idea. I was happy poodling along at 50mph with the rest of the group, that way i got to see (some) of them at full chat.

It was blimmin hot, if there's any cooling issues with yours whatsoever then get it sorted asap. We spent a good hour in 35+ degree heat crawling up and down some road because nobody knew exactly where our entrance to the track was, there were different coloured tickets depending on where you were going to be parked. Our was half way along a road between two roundabouts, at each roundabout was a Marshall. Marshall one would send us to Marshall two, Marshall two would send us back to Marshall one. My engine had approx 900 miles on it by this point, if ever there was a test for a newly rebuilt engine, this was it.

You must visit the Le Mans Museum, very interesting. Although there is the option of camping, we opted for a Gites. Maybe not the best idea if you want to drink in the atmosphere but it was certainly nicer to chill out in after a day in the baking Sun.

As far as i'm aware, i'm going too. I need to chase it up with the others first to see what's happening.

A good picture album on a big event. I do have a question. Why do some people black out their licence plate numbers in pictures (as I see you have done)? I see it is usually UK plates were this is done. Is there something nefarious people can do with it as opposed to copying it in real life and doing the same thing?

Hi,

As far as i'm aware, if you can get the registration index and like the car or know it has some expensive parts fitted, you can write to the DVLA (govening body who deals with this kind of stuff) saying you need the adress of the owner because he keeps blocking my driveway / a bit fell off and i want to give it back / some other genuine reason and et voila, you get the address and nick the car.

I've seen people trying to build a database of all our car details and to put it bluntly, it serves no purpose but to put our cars at risk. This is how i understand it, if i have gotten it totally wrong then feel free to put my mind at rest ;)

The DVLA will never give you an address of a present keeper
If you have some information on a car they may pass that on to the present keeper.

This .gov website seems to suggest otherwise.

I went to watch the 24hr at Le Mans many years ago.

The drive from the French port to Le Mans and back amongst so many classics was amazing. The entire deck of our ferry was covered in my favourite cars from several decades. It was reported that 120,000 of the 200,000 crowd were British and most of them seemed to have drive in a classic or sports car.

If you want to stay at a hotel near the track, book early. I had to stay at a place over 50 miles away. As said above, the queues can be long and the heat fierce so make sure your Collins system is in A1 condition.

I heard the greatest sound on 4 wheels that year. It was the Panoz V8's blasting down the main straight. At night the discs glow red under braking - lovely stuff.

We were based at the S bend by the Dunlop bridge, the cars would fly towards us, turn right and let off the throttle before veering left and away from us. We'd see the red hot brakes and also a perfect blue flame jetting out the exhaust on overrun. Seeing that at dusk while it's still very warm and a beer in hand made for an awesome atmosphere.
