Crowdsourcing a derivative Triumph V8, 32 valve design?

I've always been attracted to the sound produced by the 16 valve Sprint and the Stag. I think the latter sounds better than the BOP/RV8.

I stumbled upon this video that demonstrates the capability of modern casting technology and began to wonder if the Triumph community had the interest and strength to pursue an evolution of the old design?

There was discussion on the [url="http://forum.triumphdolomite.co.uk/"]Dolomite forum[/url] about producing a new block suitable for high revs (>7k). I don't follow the Stag forums, but assume there may also be interest there to contribute to a crowdsourcing initiative.

I hope more engaged community members will cross post this so we can collectively engage the community.

Hi,

The bore spacing of a Lotus 907 16 valve engine is the same a Rover V8, it is with this fact in mind that at least two groups of clever people have 32 valved a Rover V8, one group here and the other in the US of A.

The lads over here have installed theirs into a MGB. Not content with 32 valves they have also have twin turbos hanging of it. One of the biggest issues is one cylinder head is back to front when mounted on a V8 block making this far from a simple bolt on job ! ! !

John,

Yes, I've seen the UK GT3 MGB project, but not heard of the state-side one. Do you have a link?

Regardless, these are still only an evolution of the BOP/RV8, rather than an English V8, and last I looked Shalders and Isaacs were yet to come up with an elegant engine front solution to handle timing and cooling.

It seems to me that the Triumph V8 has been overlooked for its development potential.

Link to Nic's project, featured on a ' friendly' forum, we use to get a fair bit of cross traffic ' back in the day ' lots of interesting projects going on so worth a look around -

Fitting Sprint heads would give you all the same issues as Lotus heads on a Rover, one back to front, driving the cams, inlet and exhaust manifolds, cooling the thing ect, I guess the combustion chambers on the Sprint would line up ok, would need to check the bore sizes of the engines, would want valves opening up onto the edge of the bore!

But all said and done would love to see and hear one 8) Always though the sound of a standard Triumph V8 better than any Rover. And as you say it would be a real 32 valve English engine. If I win a stuuuupppid amount on the Euro Lottery do you fancy giving it a go !!!

The difference between US V-8 (Rover V-8) and European V-8 (Triumph V-8) is that the American crankshaft is cross plane whereas the European's are single plain. That gives each it's own distinctive sound and some prefer one some the other. Not sure why the division, I think it has something to do with the larger displacement of the American V-8's as they evolved through the age (although there are small american V-8's and large European V-8's). The single plain crankshafts don't require as heavy a flywheel so will rev up quicker (handy in a smaller displacement).

That being said not sure why you would want to 32 valve a Triumph V-8 when there are better/modern 32 valve aluminum blocks out there for transplant unless the answer is "just cause" or to see "what could have been", perhaps reason enough.

Lasar scanning and 3d printing of patterns could help? Also there are the Saab designs?

Hi,

Yeah looks good, you would need to cast a ' mirror ' cylinder head for right hand side. Looking on You Tube found this, the front cover also would need attention and naturally all the goes inside... dont even mention camshafts and firing orders !!
