Number plate identification

Postby Polly-Red7 » 10 Aug 2015 09:51

A bit of a long shot this one! But the image I have posted is of "polly's" rear number plate. Has anyone ever seen this type of plate before as I'm after a white one for the front?

Try as I might I cannot find any reference to this type of raised plastic digit plate anywhere. I'm presuming it is original as it is made by unipart? As you can see the type face is quite unusual on the "P" and "L". I have even tried font recognition software without success.

I posted a similar topic on Facebook a while back and was given the names of a couple of plate suppliers who do the 70's style plates but looking at their webpages the font used by all of the suppliers seems to be the standard one?

As always any help is greatly appreciated :D

Thanks for the photo Steve, your chevette plates are exactly the same :D . I've been given the heads up about Tippers when I posted on Facebook before. The plate looks spot on, but I'm not sure about the font? Still an email costs nothing!

Re the reg plate it suprised me that it's a Preston reg. I googled the reg plate when I first bought the car and a guy on the TR register forum said it was his first company car when he worked for BL.

Getting plates made don't you have to comply with the new regulations regarding type face and spacing etc?

Hi,

Although not 100% the required font for MOT, I personally would pass it, would be harsh not too. You could certainly recognize the registration number and so would ANPR camera's, which what the checking of font is really all about !

Cheers John

Just put Polly through the MOT and as with previous ones nobody has ever commented that I should change the rear plate? I've emailed Tippers with the photo so we'll see if they can oblige :D thank you all for your advice btw

Have a look at the topic "Number plates". I believe my post of 16th October 2012 at 22.59 hrs is still correct. Regards, supercass

Technically if you fit new plates they have to comply with the up to date regulations, but it is not retrospective so you do not have to change existing ones that were legal when they were fitted. If you bought one of the plates you are talking about it would not be e marked so would be illegal. The difficulty for the police and mot testers is knowing how long the plate has been on the car.

Try both Tippers, Southend and the West Country, the company split a few years ago, believe they both do them.

Well a solution seems to be presenting itself! Tonight I've managed to purchase 5 of the 6 characters I need (of the correct font) from eBay :D so just need to find a 0 :D
