Went out shopping

Postby stevie_a » 07 Aug 2015 17:23

Well I am off work for a few days, and today i had to go and pick up some shopping

on my way home i stopped off at work to pick up a couple of things, I had taken the TR7 instead of the BMW Z3

I will tell you this, on a journey of 20 miles i got 4 thumbs up, 5 head nods of appreciation and two " nice car mate "

on the journey. and most of that on the M8 motorway .

You don't get that when you drive a BMW ..... 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I'm glad i took the Triumph now.
If it's not broke don't fix it.

I ran errands in my TR6 recently. I was stopped at a traffic light whem a little old lady in the crosswalk paused in front of my car. She looked the TR up and down a couple of time, then looked at me and said "Cute car." It made my day.

That is cool. It's nice sometimes but it can be embarrassing too. Last Monday I had a kid ask me if he could take pictures and then asked me if I could start it back up and rev it a few times so he could record it. Alright, it is flattering. I feel like a proud papa sometimes. I do like to talk about it.

I had mine on the drive earlier this week. A bloke in his 50's walked past.

"I always thought those X1/9's were smaller", he said.

"They never had a Triumph badge on the nose either", I said.

After a few minutes it turned out that he'd had a few classics back in the day. He mourned the day he sold his black Ford Capri 2.8i but was glad to see the back of an ageing Lancia Beta which appeared to dissolve itself on his driveway. :( It's funny how our cars get people talking, even if they think it's something else. :)

Errr. Adam. A point to deliberate.
Did yours have a TRIUMPH badge on the front...?
LOL!

You can see the Triumph badge on the front but it's subtle. I like it.

Ah yes. Subtle. In fact, very subtle! I stand corrected!

Thank you for your expression of good taste  I've had a set of TR8 decals in the cupboard for many years but have always liked the idea of my wedge being a bit of a sleeper. I've embarrassed a few TVR's and Dolly sprints in my time (without being too silly  )

Think I saw you out shopping today Andrew, coming out of Sainsburys TW as I went in to get fuel. Waved, but then I was in the Saab and sounded like you were trying to control a V8!

Sometimes you can be caught out if you drive your classic everyday, like I was doing last year and missed quite a few thumbs up and waves from other motorist :( They must have thought I was a right up myself type
Today I was in the Triumph 2.5 and waved at an MGA, it looked like he half heartily waved back
Mind you it was hot and this makes any type of involuntary movement difficult

Recently one Sunday, when in an unfamiliar part of Brisbane I stopped behind a Mr Whippy van, [soft serve icecream van], stopped serving half a dozen kids, & a couple of adults, to ask directions.

I soon had all the kids, & a couple of passers by around me. One of the kids told me it was a great car, & the rest agreed. They were really impressed when I popped the headlights.

Usually it's in service stations that someone will come up with, "Haven't seen one of them in years", or "Gee you've looked after that well", & a friendly smile.

I do think we become used to our cars, & no longer notice when people quietly admire them.

You were very lucky Hasbeen not to have had ice cream dripped all over your car
Imagine how great the 'Mr Whippy' business would take off if he had a TR7 Van conversion  ???

When ever our club is in a parade (usually Ladysmith Days Parade to pay them back for giving us the use of their dog walk park down by the ocean for our Brits on the Beach show) when I pop up my lights by a group of kids it never fails to turn their eyes to saucers, lots of finger pointing and "did you see that". Adults too to see if their kids saw it. I sometimes feel sorry for the other Triumphs/MG's around me that they would feel ignored.

Around eight years ago i was following a bus full of school kids who were doing the usual pointing, waving and giving hand gestures to me from the back window. I flashed the headlamps, every single kids jaw dropped. They dropped back down below the window and i didn't see anything of them after that. I assume that was a good thing?

My sister thought mine was a Lotus and i'll admit it now, i was ashamed to say it was a TR7. These days i'm more than proud to say what it is.

Rob.
