High level brakelight

Postby saabfast » 30 Jul 2011 21:29

I always fancied fitting a h/l brakelight but I am not keen on spoilers on the bootlid. The alternative was fitting a light unit to the roll bar but the rear view mirror view is quite restricted enough by the roll bar so I didn't want to clutter it further. Then I saw these 'new' LED strips on fleabay. The red LED's shine out of the side of the strip and they are only 2mm thick (300mm long x 5mm wide) so don't show at all or obscure the mirror.
Pictures were taken at dusk as its difficult for the camera to pick it up in daylight but they are not bad, and it shows with the hood up or down. I still have to tidy the wiring a bit but wanted to make sure it would work.
Not sure of the legality or if there are rules on what you can use as a h/l brakelight (probably needs to be EC stamped or something) so might have to disconnect for the next MOT if they object.

Well it looks pretty good Alan [:)],

As far as i am aware there is no restrictions on LED lights, i think most cars now with a high level light are LED, the person to ask would be John215 i think he's an MOt tester.

High intensity light fitted to roll cage?

Postby bonnietiler » 04 Aug 2015 10:22

Now on my car..in a different life..I have seen the photos.. "Bertie" was fitted with a high level high intensity brake light or rear light attached behind the driver/passenger at head height and onto the roll cage/bar I even have a little 5 pin din plug on the rear shelf in order to power the blighter.
For one reason or another it was missing from my car when I bought it.
I'd like to return it to how it was but wonder if anybody could point me in the correct direction to buy another?
Cheers

No idea what the original would have been like but I have fitted one to mine on the underside of the Alley roll bar. It is a 'side emitting' LED strip which is only about 3mm thick as I wanted something which did not block the rear view (which is limited enough by the roll bar). Got it from eBay a few years ago, there should be some pics somewhere from the forum in its previous life.

If it's not broke don't fix it.
