Radio Cassette Wiring Query

Postby TonyS » 14 Oct 2014 15:27

I'm trying to fit a period Triumph-branded Motorola radio but I need some guidance please on which wires to connect where as the colour-coding from radio to car doesn't match.

This is what I have from the car of course:

...and this is the back of the radio:

I can see that the red from the car connects to the brown from the radio, and that the green/yellow from the car connects to the spade connector at the back of the unit.

That will leave me with the speaker wires I guess. So I have green & green/black and grey & grey/black from the car. However the remaining wires to connect to on the radio are black 1, black 2, green and blue.

Any help appreciated.

The spade on the rear of the radio is for a ground which should be black.

I am not sure what the yellow/green wire is but I seriously doubt that it is a ground. It could be for the radio ilumiation lighting.

Typically a blue wire from the radio is for the power antenna.

You might want to check whether the radio is for a positive of negative ground car as well.

Hi,

I would say that someone has used household wiring when it come to that green/yellow wire. For those not in the UK green/yellow is earth colour on twin and earth household cable. Light green / yellow wire is normally associated with indicators, O/S if I remember correctly.

On the car this wire should be black as mentioned. Green and grey speaker wires.

Your radio looks like,

Brown - live

Earth onto tag

Green - one speaker live

Blue - other speaker live

Black - speaker earths

Cheers John

Thanks John, that sounds like it.

I can't explain why the earth wire is green/yellow as the car is extremely original and certainly hasn't been rewired.

Is there a rule to work to for left/right speaker? i.e. is the car grey wire the left or right speaker? Is the radio blue wire the left or right speaker?

Also, are the speaker wires with the stripe the positive or the negative?

Hi Tony,

As such most simple car speaker there is no positive or negative as such, they will work either way, the important part is making sure they are in phase, ie. wired the same each side. I personally use the tracer wire as positive.

You can normally see which way the speaker wires go under the centre heater or peel bank one of the car connectors.

Would check to make sure that green/yellow wire is a good earth, seen all sorts of cr4p wiring over the years, people don't realise how important a good earth is [:o)]

Cheers John
