TR8-TVR strip down rebuild....

Some time ago this was talked about,
TVR borrowing a TR8 to strip down and rebuild when producing one of there new models.
I seem to remember the car been at Billing a few years ago.
Can someone please refresh me of the story with any possible pics.


My Tr7 is having the bottom end worked on in the old TVR factory by Mike Vernon ex TVR engineer (he was the guy chosen to go to the states with a couple of Tuscans when they were filming the Travolta film Swordfish) - (probably to fix them every two minutes [:D] )
I think it'll be an interesting conversation when i go and see him next week but i want to have my facts straight [;)]

I haven't been able to get it officially confirmed by anyone but the story I did hear was that at the end of TR7/8 production a V8 was taken up to Blackpool so TVR could take it apart to learn about how to make their own V8 sports car. It's no surprise that their next model looked just like a TR7 Drophead. This would have all happened around the time DeLorean were trying to get the money from the government to transfer TR8 production to Northern Ireland and change its name (plus remove the swage line - big mistake) so it's entirely plausible. There had also been a fairly close relationship between TVR and Standard-Triumph over the years as TVR had been getting six cylinder engines from them for years.

So it would appear the TR7/8 was a major factor in the success of the Blackpool company up until their demise a few years ago. The Rover V8 eventually went out of production so TVR replaced it with their own design which was likely a costly mistake for such a limited numbers producer.

John is right,in early 1980 TVR were working on the 350i, because of this they asked BL if they would be able to supply a suitable fuel injected V8. At the time BL saw this as an opportunity to take up the supply of engines which had been earmarked for the US spec TR8 efi. As part of the deal TVR were offered a US spec TR8 to help save development time as the 350i would not be a competitor to the soon to be discontinued TR8. As it turned out the swuspension, brakes and most no engine related parts were totally different. The car was totally dismantled, but later rebuilt and registered on a Q plate.
In later years a subsidiary of TVR were building oversized V8s for Land Rover so it had gone full circle.
