VIN Number

Postby Dave Dyer » 27 Mar 2014 19:59

Hi Chaps,

Is it possible to find a VIN number from just knowing the Reg plate?

Thanks,
Dave

I don't think so Dave. DVLA won't tell you unless you are the registered keeper of the car with DVLA, the only other place it would be recorded is on MOT certificates.

Bugger!

I've bought a car that I plan to put back on the road, its been off the road for the last 20 years, the owner had lost the V5, theres no vin plate and being a 1979 the VIN isn't stamped into the body, so am I stuck? I don't want to reduce it to spares just because I can't register it!

Dave if you own it (receipt) just apply for a V5 and say no visible Vin on the V62 form. If they want to inspect the vehicle they will but I doubt you'll have a problem. Send them the £25 as that's all they're interested in.

That is a challenge too far for the DVLA.

There used to be a website that motor factors used for ordering parts, I got into it through the back door, it allowed you to put the reg in and it gave the VIN, engine type etc etc

Thanks Chaps,
I'm going to do as you suggested John and send the V62 in with a comment about the VIN, then I'll just have to watch the letter box for the next few days (or weeks!?)
