Trun signal switch

Having problems with my turn signal switch, and I am considering rebuilding it.

Has anyone here ever rebuild one?

Issues:
* When turning left, need to "jiggle" switch for left indicator to come one.
* After left turn, you need turn the wheel more to get it to turn off than after right turns.
* Lights - bright / dim / flash. Recently something broke internally and it slides freely between these three states.

Anyone know of a diagram on the internals, or have pictures.

My car is a 1980. Looks like there is a different switch 79 and before, and one 80 and after. Of course the one I need is much more expensive.

Am I crazy for wanting to rebuild, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one (or used if I can find one for a 1980).

Yes, but I only managed it because I had mine & the one off my spares car.

It wasn't that I should have needed the parts, I only needed some because I lost them when the first one went SPRONG, when the housing separated.

I suggest you find a largish cardboard carton to take it apart in, to catch any spronging parts. As long as you have all the parts you should be able to work out where they came from, even if it does shoot them out.

It is not all that high tech, but is a little unusual, & knowing what to expect the second time made it easier.

I cut about half a turn off all the springs as they were putting a high load on the old plastic the leavers go into, & I wanted to prevent them breaking it.

A clean, spring reduction & reassembly with dielectric grease, & it has worked happily for 12 years since.

Watch out when opening it up to get inside. The copper spring is under tension / compression and will ping out as soon as you open up the casing.

Ok - I did it. I supplied pictures with comments for people using the search feature in the future.

Things popped out when I opened it up. I don't I have it back together exactly same way it was, but it appears to have fixed two of my three issues. I am still not sure where the ball bearing and one of the springs go (I put them in the mirror to where the pointed part goes). Anyone else know?.


It still slides freely between dims, brights, and flash. I suspect I am missing something on the bottom near the green wire on the far left (there are two pictures from the bottom if anyone can tell).
