Snaps for boot (cover) over top (hood)

Postby troydeon » 17 Mar 2013 16:10

Hello all. My DHC TR7 has had the top (hood) replaced before I bought it and it didn't come with a cover...
I got a cover for it but the car doesn't currently have the snaps across the back...
I was thinking about not bothering with them, I guess I should do a fit and see how it looks, but was wondering if others have seen this and what they did about it...

The snaps aren't there so you can match it up to you're situation (install snaps to match your car). I assume they are slightly different car to car.

Brought mine to an upholstery shop.
Had it done in 25 minutes and charged me $25

The steel rail which slides into the pocket at the base of the hood has holes for the snaps. You need to feel for the holes, touch them with a drill to open a hole in the hood fabric (or release from the nuts under the rear deck and pack up to avoid damage to the deck panel) and pop rivet the snaps through the rail. The position of the other half of the snaps can then be marked for the cover and fitted in position.

This could be tricky. My hood cover fits very tightly. On a cold day I have difficulty snapping it. So if you do the fit in the cold, it may not be tight enough on a hot day. For it to look good it should be tight with no wrinkles.

Same with mine (it's the original 33 year old hood and cover, a little shrunk, not very pliable but still looking like new). Once I get it snapped though, it stays snapped and is nice and tight. You still would want to do it on a warm day I think as a loose cover won't look right.

Well I had to replace the snaps on the top to match the size of the catches that are on the car for the top... it used up all the snaps I had... I'll get catches to match the four snaps across the back and the three in the front to finish it up. Temperature here is 90 today...
It looks a bit off right now but I still prefer to not having a cover on it... I always get the feeling that the wind is going to catch it and rip it off like you see on movies and such... I do live in a windy part of Texas...

Mine is tight too, could be due to the way it is trimmed around the Aley roll bar. I fix it to the rear studs but it won't stretch to the ones on the interior panel behind the seats.
