Thoughts on exhaust wrap

Postby REPLIC8 » 08 Dec 2012 19:43

I'm toying with the idea of wrapping the downpipes on my TR8. It's got standard cast manifolds then single downpipes to a balance pipe just before the centre boxes. It's a stainless steel system and you can hear the valve gear noise along the length of the downpipes. I was thinking wrapping them may dull this noise down a bit, but is wrapping a good idea or not? Also any suggestions as to which wrap to use as there's loads for sale and all seem the same to me. [:)]

The wrappings are for headers so they wrap around a single round pipe. Not sure how you would wrap a standard manifold so it doesn't look like your nine year old daughter did it. The ceramic wrapping like ceramic coating will insulate the heat keeping the engine bay cooler and shifting the heat front further down the exhaust pipe. Not sure how much sound insulation you will get from either ie. will it be noticeable.

Just to clarify, I was only going to wrap the downpipe, not the manifold. [:)]

I would really like the cast manifolds to be 'cooler' and it seems the only way to do it is to cover them with ceramic paint or similar for around £250 per side as shown here:

Hi Andy,

I wrapped my manifolds, I was supprised how much quiter it made things, not to mention cooler. I sprayed the manifolds first with VHT paint, wrapped them ( make sure you do this with the wrap wet it makes it easier and when it dry's it shrinks )then once wrapped sprayed again. Oh and wear gloves, cover your arm's etc as that stuff itches so much it drives you mad [B)]

Or you can do it yourself for cheap. Never done it myself but am tempted when I pull the engine on TCT.
Air dry:

Or Oven cure:

https://www.columbiacoatings.com/category_s/1051.htm

Not sure of the latest technology but you used to be able to shoot the manifold, heat it in a kitchen oven at 500 degrees F and install and let the flame front complete the cure. For larger items one guy extended his kitchen oven with cement board and did his TR6 grill although that was for powder coating (at 400F).

These days you can probably get it done cheap at local powder coating shop (lil' old Duncan, BC has one). Or try your local high school that has auto shop. One of our club members teaches auto shop at his high school and they do powder coating (ceramic coating is easier). They did two Spitfires last year and are doing two Spitfires this year. The kids are totally enthused and work hard. A big change from working on rice rockets that they would normally be involved in. The club donated $500 to the program this year to match the donation from a local hot rod club to keep these young kids interested/introduced to car restoration as opposed to just auto mechanics.
