Wheel Wobble

Postby steve_1360 » 19 Jun 2010 21:23

I've got wheel wobble on my TR7, its starts at 55 and continues to 70. Any ideas what could be causing it? I don't think its wheel balancing now.
When i got the car it had a steering problem in that the steering wheel would stick, which i traced to a incorrectly fitted steering column bush. Since i fixed that i got wheel wobble. I've just had new tyres fitted and i still got the wobble. Took it back and got them to balance the wheels again and watched them to make sure they came up zero on the machine. Still got the wobble, any ideas?
Cheers Steve

Welcome to the forum. This is a very common problem on the TR7 & it comes down to the design of the front suspension. The best solution seems to be to have the wheels balanced while they are on the car which is something not many shops can do. If you use the Search function on this forum you will find all the other threads on this topic. Its a bit clunky & if it times out you will needto hit the refresh button but all the wisdom of the ages can be found with it.

Before Mildred has a chance, let me say, try the search function. You will find every idea man has ever set forth as to how to fix wheel wobble.

You Boys are getting quick on the draw! As we had this shootout again just a couple of weeks ago, may I please respectfully suggest the wheels be checked for warpage, particularly at the lug nut holes.

I will let the the rest of the posse chime in with their remedies, as they have many.

Thank you,

Mildred Hargis

Thanks for the welcome and the suggestions. I've just used the search function and have got lots of ideas!
It's got aftermarket alloys so i don't think have have warped around the lug nuts.

Cheers

Steve

35-40 mph here. I've learned to live with it. Too many other life issues to worry about!

But the car looks good! [;)]

Mine had the dreaded wheel wobble from 55mph to about 63 mph when I went to drive it home after purchase. It was quite violent but smoothed right out when I took it over 65mph once (because of a big truck bearing down on me on the Seattle bypass causeway). The tires were bald and there was no steering column bushing. After new ball joints, tie rod ends, greasing steering rack, new tires, front springs and shocks, hard poly on the front end, poly steering column bushing, all was smooth. I just did a 5 wheel tire rotation (alloys) after 4,000 miles and everything is still silky smooth. I think the main culprit was the tires but no way of knowing if there was any other factor or combination of factors. I think any one of these can cause a problem either in combination or by themselves and until you keep at them until the problem disappears you can't be sure.

I think you are exactly right. It is a combination. That's why no one seems to be able to nail it down to one component. I did nearly the same as above getting to the tires last. Prior to installing the new tires I had quite a bit of improvement. But it took the new tires to smooth it out completely.

Mine doesn't wobble at all. But I need new tires and several front suspension bits. Now I'm scared to change anything!
