Slow, almost stopped indicators

Postby John Wood » 17 Apr 2015 20:45

This must have been a topic in the past? I actually sorted a car out at Billing one year when they went tits up on route with a little help and input from other members.
Can someone remind me where to start and get them back up to speed please?

Its much easier to go to an electronic flasher unit. You get a constant flasher rate all the time and its not dependant on voltage or engine revs any more.

The original flasher unit is dependant on the amount of electricity going through the unit. If all your electrical connections are clean and your alternator is putting out the correct amperage it will work fine. This means cleaning all bulb bases/sockets electrical connections etc. with something like Brasso, having the amp connections clean and taking the alternator apart to clean the commutator (fine sandpaper it clean) make sure the brushes are in good order. Or just use an electronic flasher which isn't so fussy. I did the former and am running the original flasher with no slow down except for a slight bit when I'm idling and have the headlights on and the fan on full speed. I have A/C so must have the high output alternator (65amps?).

Try cycling the hazard switch a few times or if that does not work strip and clean it, the connections degrade through lack of use increasing the resistance in the indicator circuits.
