Buying a TR without a V5?

A Guy locally is looking is selling a White 2L TR7, its humble money so I've agreed to buy it.

The Owner doesn't have the V5 for the car, the Reg Checks out as a White 1978 FHC 2L last taxed in March 2006, but the VIN plate has been removed but possibly as part of the started restoration.. not sure.

There are two other plates on the car, long thin, rounded ends & riveted on, are either of these duplicates of the VIN number?

I assume when i apply for a new Tax book i will have to include the VIN plate in the Paperwork, but its in the back of the mind that the car could have a bad past, it could be stolen etc and the ID may have been trying to be hidden?

the other 2 plates are likely to be body numbers and NOT the VIN ... send me a PM with them and i will see if i can find the VIN tomorrow while i'm at the Heritage archives

Iain, remember the V5 only shows the registered keeper of the vehicle, who is not necessarily the legal owner. As Christopher says, the two plates you can see on the car will be the original body number & the trimmed body number, but AFAIK these bear no relation to the VIN.

It is important to establish that the seller is the legal owner & hence can pass title to the car to you. Has he got a receipt for buying the car? Can you HPI check it to make sure it is not recorded as stolen? Remember that he cannot pass on to you a better title to ownership than he holds - so if he has no title (e.g. it's a stolen car) then you have no title even if you buy in good faith. A previous legal owner can come forward & take back the car.

If you have the registration number of the car then DVLA will be able to issue a replacement V5, and that will give you the VIN, it's not too hard to get a replacement VIN plate made up once you have the correct paperwork.

If you go ahead get the seller to give you a receipt for your money, so at least if something questionable comes up about the ownership of the car you have something to show where you got it from.

Thanks Tony, those are all the worries in the back of my mind: although the seller seems like a decent chap!

I have the reg, but to apply to DVLA your re required to know the VIN number as they ask for it on the form.

Is the VIN also stamped under the rear boot rubbers in all years of TR7? I read that on Google last night.

Will an HPI check give me the full VIN number?

check on passenger door mate sometimes vin plate on there

Only late (Solihull?) cars had the VIN stamped in the boot gutter, so I don't think you will find it on a 78 car.

I didn't know you had to supply the VIN to DVLA when requesting a new V5. Bit like "we know what it is but we are not going to tell you!" Not very helpful but maybe it helps prevent fraud.

Any old MOTs - that would show the VIN?

A 1978 car should have the chassis plate on the passenger door edge, many people don't realise this, it has caused confusion in the past and Ive seen cars which show the body number as its chassis number on the MOT certificate.
I recently bought 2 write off cars from an insurance company, both have vin plates but no other id. One an early Speke car and the other the last ever TR7 Sprint, have been stripped of their reg numbers.

I have some live plates and papers complete with the tin and metal boot lip bits, only problem is it is for a DHC [:0]
