How much height do you need in the garage.......

....for a 2 post lift?

The House is getting an extension and the tumbledown detached garage is getting replaced by an up to date larger integral one. Mrs Bushey reckons it needs an inspection pit on the floor, I'd prefer a 2 post lift if the height allows since you'd still be using axle stands for most of the difficult jobs. The lifts appear on fleabay now and again.

So, how much ceiling height would I need for a 2 post lift? I've got the option of a split level drive (not popular with Mrs Bushey) and a tall garage ceiling, or a single level drive and a normal height garage with axle stands.

In Calgary I had a sloping back yard overlooking Paskapoo (part of Calgary's '88 Olympics) so I cut in from the back lane which required a 4 foot cement wall around three sides with a regular two car garage package put on top giving a 12 foot ceiling and a ten foot double door. It was a great solution.

My sister in Edmonton has a two story house with attached garage. There you need footings at least 4.5' below ground level because of frost line in winter so the houses are built on top. This gives some were between 12 and 14' clearance in the garage. If your attached garage runs up half way up the second story (instead of even with first story) kind of like a split level, you have plenty of room.

My shed is 12M X 6M, 3M high at the gutter, 3.3m at the peak of the roof, and there is room to lift my TR7 or Celica to the max. height of my 2-post hoist.

I've just built a garage. Went to 10 ft ceiling because the two post lift I want requires a minimum of 9'4".

There are many different lifts on the market requiring different heights, but a 10 ft ceiling will accommodate most of them.

Inspection pits can have their drawbacks although some of these can be minimised with careful design and adherence to best safe practices.
Here are some of the potential problems:

*There's a bloody great hole to fall in when the car isn't there and
someone didn't remember/bother to cover the pit.

*The pit can flood and/or fill up with all sorts of detritus.

*Fuel and or exhaust fumes can collect in them, making them a hazardous place.
( I knew a bloke that blew himself up whilst working under the car, when he accidentally ignited the petrol fumes that had collected in the pit!)
