Reverse light switch

Postby nick » 24 Nov 2014 17:57

My reverse lights quit working so after some work with the multimeter I ran it down to the switch (5speed). I was going to remove it but thought I would screw it into remote gear changer a few turns further. Well that cured the problem. So the question is how far should that switch be in there? Mine is showing about 3/8 of an inch of the thread. No guidance that I could find in the service manual.

Basically just screw it in in reverse gear until the lights come on. It is activated by the internal arrangement pushing on the switch plunger to make the contacts. Should then go off when taken out of reverse. Some have a lock nut but I can't remember the TR7 one.

I bent the bracket the switch is on when I had the box out to fit a new clutch.

From memory I think I just bent the bracket back into place with pliers from under the car. I know it only took a few seconds, once I'd found the problem.

One of my 7s, you had to hold the gear leaver over in the reverse plane to keep the switch closed. As soon as you let go of the leaver, the reverse lights went off. That was one of my "Gunna-dos". I was always going to fix it, but sold the car still the same way. To be fair, it was only like that for a couple of years.

I just replaced my switch - there are instructions in the electrical section of the Bentley manual. Take a look at the scanned copy of the service manual available on this forum under "Switches" on page 386 "reverse lamp switch - remove and refit". I sort of followed these instructions but then had to fiddle a bit with the adjustment to get it to work.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for.
