Door lights

Postby nick » 22 Nov 2014 21:17

What is the correct way to install the door lights? Should the light illuminate when the lens is in the down or up position when the door is open? Down makes sense. However, if installed that way the light shines in your eyes when it is switched on by pressing up.

Also, is there a source for these lights? I thought I read somewhere where someone is making after market ones. I have a broken one and have not been able to come up with a elegant repair.

I've repaired mine (the lock in tabs) by crazy gluing them. Then 24 hours later reinforcing them with tips of zip ties, 5 minute epoxy and Shoe Goo. Not sure off hand about lighting but you can see which way is up by the picture below of one partly removed so you can see wire connections.

See centre and far tab has zip tie tail glued on and closest one is yet to be done. The zip tie tail gives it the reinforcing the brittle tabs need. Even if the tabs aren't broken I would reinforce them as if they aren't brokem now they will be.

Nick: What color are your trims, chrome or black? I think I have a couple spares around, but I don't recall which color they are. I also think these are one of the parts that people have found a cross-reference replacement for from another car.

I'll check in Parts Inventory tomorrow. I may find a surprise for you.

There is a Peugeot 106 (and maybe Citroen/Renault) interior light that is a very close match and fit. There are two types, one has the same pivoting function to switch on/off, the other is a fixed trunk/boot light w/out the swivel. Check out UK Ebay they are often available new (14 - 18 UK Pds) or second hand. I believe Robsport also has the same/similar item listed. Terminal sizes are slightly smaller but easy to change on the wiring loom inside the door. Rgds, DM

With my door lights in the flush position, they only light up when the door is open. IIRC, flicking them down is permanently on and up permanently off.

I'd rather have had a single light shining down from near the rear view mirror as per my MX5 as the 7's door lights shine straight in your eyes when you're in the car.

When Grinnall repainted my car I ended up with someone else's lights, one chrome and one black, both cracked and damaged and wired up so neither worked when the door opened. Getting good replacement was difficult and that was in the late 80's

Dan,
I can use either one, black or chrome. The broken one is chrome but if black is all I can get I can paint my good chrome one without much effort.

Spyder, that's a great post on the fix. You should move that to the workshop forum if it's not already there.
The thing I find with crazy glue is I only have about a 50% success rate with it. All except for gluing my fingers together, or to the item I'm repairing. For those instances it's 100%. I get so frustrated with that stuff. Sometimes it works instantly and flawlessly. Other times it does nothing. I haven't figured out the code yet.

Crazy glue works best if it's fresh and the break is such that the parts fit close together. It basically is just to hold parts together while you epoxy for strength. You always need reinforcing material and not rely on the epoxy alone. We used this method an all sorts of repairs in the office product repair industry when it wasn't practical to get a new part.

For a while in my DHC I installed a MGF rear view mirror that included a down light connected to the normal door sensors. It included a switch in the mirror so you could turn on the light separately, but I also added a switch on the dash to turn on all interior lights so you didn't need to open the door to light the cab.

As for direction of the door lights, I go for middle position for normal off but on when door open (aesthetically better this way), and manually on when down - for when reading map etc. (although with manual switch override I never actually need to move them).

Nick:
I'm trying to leave town for the week, so I won't have a chance to send any parts until I get back. I'm pretty sure the spares I have are black, but I may be able to dig them out today.

Mr Nick,

Well, I did some digging and scrounged up most of the one light fixture I have. After some cleaning, it's still filthy. The bad news is, it's missing a bulb mounting tab and probably a piece off the switching mechanism(?). The housing itself is black plastic, made in France, with # Seima 35310 on it.

I'll mail it to you but will need your address there in Bend, Oregon. Perhaps your broken part and this broken part can come together to make a good one.

I got a pair of new black ones from Rob sport a few years ago. They are from the a French make and with a bit of work they fit good. Very nice looking too.
