Car Scrapage Scheme 2009 Results

Hi,

You gents over here can probably remember the Car Scrapage Scheme from 2009, where you were given cash if you scrapped an old car when buying a new one. The government ran the thing and once a car was excepted very very few ever escaped the scrap yard, personaly saw some very good cars sent to the crusher.

Under the freedom info act, figures have been released of the vehicles', numbers and types. Very depressing reading for any classic car lover [:(]

Including in these are 19 TR7's [:(][:(][:(] and one TR8 [:0]( surely a converted car )

We had a similar scheme here in the US. Cash for clunkers. What a waste of taxpayer money that was. And all those nice cars went to the crusher. It was suppose to stimulate car sales and help the economy but did nothing. A bunch of people got a subsidy to buy a new cars and after the subsidy ended car sales hit rock bottom.

Hi,

I remember we had a mint E36 come in with low mileage and full service history, totally unmarked. It was far better than my daily driver at the time and that was crushed [V] Did offer to swap it but under the rules the 'sacrificed car' had to belong to the buyer for a period of time.

I know most were average cars <b>BUT</b> a lot of classic car today were once ' average ' everyday car's, cant help but think in 30 years time there will be a lost generation of classics !

I think a very rare Armstrong Siddeley was saved after a very long fight.

In the U.S. cash for clunkers program the dealers were required to drain the oil and replace it with a silicate solution, then run the engine until it seized. That way the engines could not be salvaged.
But they did allow the bodies and some parts of the drive trains to go to scrap yards so parts could be sold.

When you look at it closer, it does seem rather mad and what a shame for all the good old cars. The only way you can make it feel a little better is by telling yourself, that it qas all the rot boxes , that it you looked at them, they would of fallen apart. Well it works for me.[xx(]

I always wondered about the logic of the scheme in the UK. The government were activily getting people to go into debt for something the for the most, was not needed if the cars the people already had were still ok. Real madness. There is no way i would of got shot of my 7 for a new car with no sole. Only to get a 3 year finance deal where if i could not keep up payments in the troubled times, they would take the car off me. When we moces to Oz there was never any question of the tr going. The new car did go though.
