Hi Chris,

That's what I personally call a dream garage [8D] Any personal favourites in that lot ?

Sorry from us 'mods' about the amount of time it took to get yourself and others over here, I am sure you have read why in older posts [:I]

Cheers John

Wish I had your garage space Christopher.[8D]

As a side note: Not all Solihull cars were SAT. My Solihull July, 1980 built Spider is TP. Whether that is because a block of 2,000 VIN's were set aside for the Spider (which I think gave rise to the speculation that 2,000 Spiders were built although it isn't known yet if all VIN's were used, I believe that is in the process of being investigated) or whether other TP VIN's were used in Solihull. I thought TP were '80 cars and SAT's were '81-'82 cars.

The SAT prefix came in at VIN406001, which was around May 81. It is the so called "World Manufacturer Code" where S = Europe, A = UK, T = Triumph. SAT was simply added in front of the existing VIN sequence. So it is indeed correct that not all Solihull built cars were SAT Vins.

What we don't know about the ACN TR8 coupes is how many of them were actually 'TR7 V8' designations. Many of them have been reported as having 'TR7 V8' on their chassis plates.

Over to you Mr. MacDonald!!!

I thought they were all officially just designated as TR7 V8s,and it's only with the passage of time that we have given them the TR8 title. Were they not just shipped over minus any official badging from the factory ? I also thought the TR8 decal was designed and added over in the States. Over to the TR8 boys, as I'm no expert on the TR8.[:p]

My understanding is that some were designated 'TR7 V8' whilst others were designated 'TR8'. Initially I thought all of them must have been TR7 V8 but others have reported their cars have a TR8 VIN plate. Tony Lee believes the V8 was always going to be called 'TR8' and other former Triumph personnel confirm this. But there is no concrete evidence and the early Speke cars having 'TR7 V8' plates just adds to the mystery.

Come on Paul MacD we're relying on you here!

They were supposed to be TR8 ... below is an original 1978 brochure for these cars ... printed in 1978.

As for the badging - they also had 'TR8' on them (as below) as I have an original TR8 with badges :)

Big filler cap on that advert as well. That must narrow down what chassis number that car is?

A couple of cars could have been used for the brochure, as yet no direct confirmation of which one. Some of the early cars have emission stickers that say TR7V8 and some that say TR8. I think (just my opinion) the cars were called TR7V8 in UK to help the homologation of the rally cars, mostly since the papers for homologation read TR7V8 and in North America they were commonly referred as TR8s to help in the TR8 launch. As usual, the answer is not black and white but BL grey.

I think the brochure car is ACN1, Ted Schumakers car. IIRC the car still had the roof mounted interior light, being an early shell, so for the interior shots the door mounted interior lights were fitted but not connected, with the door metal being rather crudely "relieved" to make them fit.

On my ACN car both the Heritage Certificate & the little tyre pressure plaque in the glovebox read TR7V8, even though it was built in August 77. As the Heritage Certificate info comes from the build card, presumably the factory were referring to cars as TR7V8 at that time. I have a BMIHT photo from 1977 that shows an ACN car clearly badged as TR7 V8, and with Sprint on the rear wings.

Obviously at some stage in late 1977 a decision was made to drop the TR7 V8 designation & badge the cars as TR8. I wonder when that was?

Christopher - I am pretty sure my copy of that brochure is dated Sept 77. I'll check when I get home.

On ACN 0025 the emission sticker reads TR8, whereas the BMHIT certificate reads TR7V8.

TR8 FHC brochure was printed 09/77 and features two TR8's ... one in Flamenco red (manual 5-speed) and one in Astral Blue (auto)with green check interior with lights on the doors ... both with aircon.

The above assumes that the photos in the brochure were the only 2 cars they used.
