Front Calipers

Postby tooslow » 24 Sep 2014 14:50

This may be an old subjet but Ive tried searching to no avail,
is there any other front 4 pot calipers/Discs that fit the TR7 other than the princess/ SDi calipers and of course Hi spec etc

I was more thinking land rover Range Rover/ MGTF etc as I did read that some one had fitted range rover calipers but no other infor exists.
AS I am from Yorkshire then lo-cost is imperitive and ad Land rover and MGTF calipers are cheap.

Just throw this out there for disscussion

I've run Capri brakes on a V8 (not impressed) and eventually went Hi-Spec with great results. My last two early 2.0l cars have been great on standard calipers with good discs and pads (even with a caravan). One was green stuff pads, and the other red stuff pads.

I'm sure that Rover Vitesse front calipers (similar to TR8) are the same as some Land/Range Rover but would need bigger wheels,,

Unless you have a V8 I'm not sure you need bigger calipers if your discs are good and have uprated pads.

I agree with Paul.

I have Volvo 4 pot front, along with with master & booster, & Nissan Skyline rear single pot discs on the back of the 8. They are great.

I have stock 7 brakes all round on the 7, in mint condition, with green stuff pads. I can lock the fronts, or all 4 wheels at will, so my braking is limited only by the quality of my tyres.

I guess if I competed in the 7 I might fade it's brakes, but with some fairly spirited driving, I have not done so on the road.

I had standard brakes and standard pads and can/have locked all four wheels. This was back when the tires were newer. True as some one had mentioned, modulation is not great at maximum braking. I have put on cross drilled/slotted rotors but can notice no real difference in braking. They were a slightly used set given to me for free but I would not have paid the money that they are asking for a new set.

I have been playing with the idea of upgrading the standard breaks that I have to a 4 pot version. I did a bit of research and i think the only viable option is to go down the Hi-Spec route. They look great and have a great write up.

The last think I want is to go through the trouble and pain of replacing the breaks it to put something old on there that you may have trouble in getting the bits.

The break upgrade is part of the reason I am thinking of ditching the factory 13' alloy and going for 14 or 15 mgf wheels.

Phil if you go MG wheels, definitely go 15"s. There are very few good tyres now available in 14" ion Oz. At least with the MG wheels you should overcome the dreaded wheel wobble, as they are stud centric. Now that is a real bonus, but they are much more expensive here than in the UK.

Remember to get the nuts too. They are quite different to standard nuts, & are expensive if you have to buy them new. It cost me $55 plus freight for one 15" MG wheel for spare on the 8, about 7 years ago, & $25 for the nuts when I realised I needed them.

As for parts availability, don't forget you are in Oz now. We have dozens of brake specialists who will bore & sleeve cylinders, & rebuild calipers with generic parts no problem. Ozzies don't buy master cylinders or wheel/slave cylinders, we don't have the rust problem that make our northern folk do that. We restore/rebuild them, & keep on using them.

When I rebuilt my 7s brakes, I went to my local friendly brake bloke who supplied me everything I needed for the complete job, including hoses, out of his generic parts bins, for A$45,00. This compares well to the Triumph specialist who wanted $40,00 a corner, & $48,00 for the master for kits ex the UK, & hoses were extra.

I can't knock the quality either, that was 14 years ago, about time I did them again I suppose.

MGFs didn't come with 14" wheels anyway!
They came with 15" or 16" wheels.

You're starting to worry me Cobber. Knowing all about MGs, & even owning one could be the first sine of senility you know [}:)].

How yer goin mate? Have they put you back to work yet, or are you still a man of leisure?

If you're still not earning, why don't you flog that MG for some petrol money, & come up here for a look around. There is still a bit of work around here, although if coal prices fall much more, there will be a flush of people back from the mines soon.

I don't know how that boy of mine will go, when he gets back around the end of January. They currently have him running the welding shop at Garden Island, putting a couple of Frigates back together. You can imagine the bitching, he's always hated welding aluminum.

At least I'll get to hear that glorious 4.6L again.

Nah, I'm back to work..... well doing what I can pickup as an industrial prostitute (contractor), it's all feasts 'n' famines ATM.

I hope he's not putting back together HMAS Ballarat, I had a hand in building that one. So it shouldn't need fixing! In fact that ship has some of my art work on the inner skin of the hull and bulkheads hidden behind the paneling, there are somewhat unflattering caricatures (some lifesize) of various members of shipyard management, in paintpen.[:D]
