Where have all the Wedges gone?

Postby busheytrader » 28 Jun 2014 13:47

Forgive me but I just haven't had the opportunity to replace the steering column bush on the 7V8 and it's still SORN'd this summer. Pressure of work, illness in the family etc etc. Having a MX5 as a daily driver for the commute around the M25 car park is no substitute...............

Due to the circumstances I haven't been able to get to any shows or meets either which leads me to the following observation. I haven't seen one single Wedge on the road this year. Normally I would have had 5 or 6 DHC sightings and maybe 1 FHC during normal driving but this year nothing. It's not like we had the endless rain that blighted 2012 either.

Have they finally all rusted away or are we all rebuilding them?

Adam

There's a few around in Kent. There were Two Fixed Heads - and a Drop Head - at a small show today!

And I love my MX5 as well - it's what a modern TR would be!

Seemed to be a reasonable turn out down at Brooklands last weekend. I've also seen two out on the roads in the last week as well.

Cheers

You don't see many around here either. A few show up at car shows. Most I think are parked in garages or under tarps waiting to be restored but with the price you can get for them people have been waiting for the prices to go up so they can recoup some of their money if/when they sell them or waiting for the time when they have the time to do it be it at retirement or when the kids move out of the house. For some of those the realization comes that that time is nowhere near so you see a few pop up on the for sale websites at low prices.

or to rephrase the question............

if you weren't on your way to a show, at a show, returning from a show or passing a show, how many Wedges have you seen on the road this year?

I saw 20 split screen VW campers this year but they were in convoy going to their show. Otherwise I only saw one on the M25 which is one more than the Wedges I've seen.

I sometimes take mine on the m25 between enfield and potters bar but only on a day off and if the weather is nice.

I have friends who from time to time have bought classic cars and have almost never driven them before selling again. One explained that he likes the thought of owning them but the reality is they do not drive like a new car/are as safe or use too much fuel.To think yhat when free roadtax was introduced scaremongers were horrified that we would all be driving old bangers.Steve..

I've seen three maybe four since I bought mine in 2002
Apart from car shows and when I go to s&s.
I think the sea air has rotted them all away here in Blackpool.
I did go and see one that was advertised locally on eBay recently

It's no different in the antipodes...I've been using mine as a daily driver for the past 4 years, and have not seen another one unless it's been on an organized run.

Apart from club events I have seen only one on the road in 14 years. I only twice seen other TRs both 3/3As, but regularly see a few 2000/2500 saloons.

Not seen one (on the road) for a long long time, but hardly surprising since the odds are approaching lottery statistics!

653(TR7 and 8's licenced on uk roads) is 0.002040625% of 32,000,000 total!

We seem to be having a plague of them here particulary in the Pretoria region. On the 27th of September Pretoria is organising a Wedge Birthday bash with hopefully 40 Wedges on show.
Interestingly most of our 7's are Solihull cars, both FHC & Roadsters but there are some Speke FHC's. There are 3 8's in Pretoria a being 1980,1982 and my 1981.
