Rear fog lamp wiring in NA cars

Postby sheetsofsound » 17 Jun 2014 03:43

Does anyone know where the wires for the rear fog lamps terminate in North American cars?

The wiring diagram shows them as Red/Blue, the switch has Red/Blue wires running into the loom.. but I can't find where they resurface, if at all. I have looked in the trunk/boot and traced all the wires I can find; no Red/Blue.

I would like to be able to hook up something to the switch.

Depending on the model year of your car, it may or may not have it.

If I recall correctly, its a male connector on the left side of the car by the trunk/boot hinge.

Thanks for the reply. I think my car doesn't have it. I've looked under every panel I can find and there is no wire. The wires are connected at the switch and run into the loom; they just disappear somewhere after that. I'll have to rig up something else.

I would think it would be in the lighting loom back by the tail lights

Me too, but it isn't there. Believe me, I've looked. I keep thinking I just missed it and I keep going back and looking. Makes a guy think he might be going crazy. Doesn't mean I haven't missed something. In fact, I'll be right back. Just going to go take another quick peek...

sheetsofsound, I don't think your going crazy.

I've had a look at my 77 North American spec car and I can say for certain there is no connector in the trunk for rear fog lights. Also, I've had a look at the bumper and can not find any mounting points for the fog light bracket on it. This is a shame because I plan fitting a rear fog light as part of the conversion to R/H drive.

Rear fog lights were not compulsory in the UK until 1980. I think TR7's were not fitted with the wiring until the 1980 model year. If your car is older it will probably not have the wiring to the rear. Presumably before that the switch just did front fog lights. Not sure if the NA cars had a common loom with the UK cars from then (probably too sensible) or just carried on with the older loom.

There are female bullet connectors up front for the fog lights, but not at the rear. Its just interesting that the switch has the wires connected for the rear, but somewhere in the loom they just... end. The car as purchased was registered as a 1980, but the badge on the door says it was built in May of 1979, and the under dash wiring matches the wiring from my Haynes manual for 1979 models from the US.

Good to know I'm not crazy. Now if I could just convince the warden, perhaps she'll let me back out to the garage.
