Unfortunately, I think the spam is from a Bot machine so there is no-one listening at the other end. It just endlessly churns out semi-random messages to any URL it finds. There's a good chance someone on here that has caught a bug and their computer is being used as the Bot without their knowledge. That would explain how they are getting past the sign-in page. It's a brave new world out there!

Clay, thanks for keeping up on it and good luck with the medical stuff! I hope your recovery is as speedy as can be.

Good explanation, I think its a good mix of spam bot with the occasional human maybe mixed in for good measure. The virus theory is also possible .....though spam has existed on this site pretty much from the beginning.
I think the real reason is that the site is just not as secure as it could be because it's in major need of a revamp. Maybe one day!

Hay Ron, with all this extra work you are having to do, I reckon we should double your salary.

Perhaps it would be possible to stop new memberships for a couple of days. Would that stop the spam?

Stop new members now.
Tighten up the registration process. Ie they have to contact a MOD to join the site.

I agree with John's idea. It will be less work for the Mods to vet new membership requests than to delete the volume of spam currently being received.
