15" Tires

I'll be shopping for tires this weekend for my new 15x6 Revolutions. Something along the lines of a performance all-season in 205/50-15. On line I've been comparing:
1) BF Goodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S (W-speed rated)
2) Hankook Ventus V2 concept2 (H-speed rated)
3) Falken Ziex ZE-912 (H-speed rated)

There seem to be more negative comments than positive comments on line, but that doesn't really surprise me. People expect them to be snow tires, they complain about noise, poor tire life, etc. I want a reasonable handling tire that can deal with rain; this is my Oregon car, so I'm really not worried about snow. I'm not too concerned about getting 50,000 miles out of them.

Does anyone have any real experience with these models, or at least these brands? Any other recommendations?

and my old BMW 3 series that i sold had Falken-912 all round

and when it comes to getting tyres for the Volvo guess what?

Hi there, I have Toyo T1r 205s on my 15 inch wheels, I can vouch for their grip as well as their predicability as I have used them for sprinting the TR7V8 as well as being great on the road. I also have them on my wife's Eurobox front drive GTI and again they are great.

I put Dunlop Direzzas DZ101 on my car a year ago and I am VERY happy with them. I got them for around $350 for the set delivered from Discount Tire Direct. They don't seem to carry them right now but here's another link. The local tire shop has them also.

Quiet, handle FANTASTIC, and very good in the rain. I certainly can't comment on durability after only 1 year.

While I haven't used them personally, I have for reviews on 13" when I was looking in 2007. Steered me away from the Dunlops (which had bad reviews) and towards the Kumho's which I'm happy with.

My cousin's husband in Kelowna ordered from them and it was cheaper to do that, pay duty and get them installed than buy them locally. That's what he said. That was back then, don't know about now.

The Dunlop Direzza and Toyo T1r get good marks as summer tires, but both manufacturers recommend against cold weather use. So far I'm looking at performance all season tires. The BF Goodrich g Forces look pretty good. Like all the others, the user reviews tend to be by people who didn't like them.

That's pretty much the rule of thumb for reviews although I've found those reviews to be more balanced than many. The better reviews are those where they compare side by side like the car magazines used to do (do they still do that?)

I'm using the dunlops 205/50/15 on the TR7 FHC. I like them very much, although I may be tempted to try some other like the falken 912 on my TR6 next so I have another tire to base my preference on.

I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison by Road & Track or somebody like that. But those reviews seem to be on 17, 18, or 19" high-performance summer tires rather than 15" high-performance all-season tires...

I decided on the Goodrich tires and got them mounted on my new Revolution wheels. I'm pretty happy with the look and the handling. We took a long drive in the rain yesterday and they seem to grip pretty well. I have to say, the ride is a little harsher than on the 13" wheels, but I think it will be all right. I haven't installed the big brake kit yet; I decided to get a new master cylinder as well before I disconnect the brake lines.

Ken,
they look superb and really suit the car. It may be something to do with my age and the sorts of cars I grew up with but I find that small wheels and fat tyres do little to enhance the look.
That said, my first foray into TR7s(disastrous really) had a car with gold thirteen inch MInilite replicas on 7j and they looked fabulous.

Very period looking and something different from the standard Minilites. The less the side wall, the higher the tire pressure, the more will transmitted through.

Why don't you just rebuild the existing master cylinder? If the cylinder isn't corroded it's much cheaper. You have to make sure you get a quality TRW kit from British Parts Northwest and use red rubber grease to lube the seals. When I did mine 7 years ago there was corrosion outside the piston travel area so it didn't affect the operation.

Yeah, master cylinder kits are cheaper, but replacement cylinders are quicker...

The only problem I have with the wheel/tire combination is a slight scraping when reversing with steering at full lock. The tire is slightly larger diameter (maybe 1/8")than the 13s, and just kisses the front lower corner of the front wheel arch at full lock. Curious that it's only when reversing. A little tap on the sheet metal should fix it; in the meanwhile I try to avoid parallel parking.

Mine did that when got it too, but only on one side (N/S). Recommendation on here was to hit the ARB on the opposite side to drive the LCA back a bit. It sort of worked but still caught a bit. I trimmed off the square corner of the lower front edge of the wing to a nice radius which looked like a factory design (and did the other side to match) and have not ad a problem since.
