Jim TenCate's New Mexico TR8s

Postby whitenviro » 28 Mar 2014 13:06

I am in Santa Fe this week for vacation and contacted Jim TenCate, master of fuel injection of the Triumph Wedge Owners Association. Jim lives in nearby Los Alamos and was kind enough to take the day and we went for a big tour of the area in his two nearly identical TR8s. What a hoot!

Here is his newest acquisition too:

We drove up some great winding mountain roads to the nearby caldera where it was snowing a bit

Then down to Jemez Springs for lunch and off to the Gillman Tunnels for a photo shoot with the cars:

Afterwards, a stop at Bandelier Nation Monument and a walk through the indian ruins, then back to Los Alamos.

I learned a lot about the feel of other cars and got an update on Jim's work with gearbox mounts; looks like I'll need to change mine back to the old mount to tone down some of the noise that I was blaming on my replacement gearbox.

We had a great time; Thanks Jim!

Nice day out! I can see why Jim calls one of the cars his "clone" car.

I'm glad you got together with Jim again. Jim does have some very nice cars. I envy him sometimes because even though he lives close to an important town, he is five minutes from the most beautiful landscapes, Indian ruins and geological structures you have ever seen.

Just too darn cold and too much snow!

Me, driving Jim's car to Triumphest!

Nice pics Dan! 22 1981 Aran Beige TR8s built according to Connew's list, of those, 5 have no records or have been salvaged, 9 are CURRENTLY registered---like mine, although it's not running yet---and the rest are presumably waiting for restoration. When I searched through the records (CARFAX and Autocheck) I found an awful lot of these cars were last seen in Canada. By the way, one was scrapped in 1986 and went to the UK for parts? Anyone know what happened to it?

BTW, mine seems to have only 16878 miles on the odometer. The O2 sensor counter suggests it might be a bit higher. LOTS of work to do on it though!

On another note, TWOA did an article on the number of 1981/2 TR8s that still survive. Best guess? 1/2 of them are currently registered and another 1/4 haven't been off the road very long. I'm guessing 3/4 of them are still around!

Back to lurking :-) Another of Dan's photos, it WAS snowy for a while!

There was one for sale in Victoria a couple of weeks ago on Craigslist or Used Victoria for $4,000 (Blue TR8 not beige) but it didn't last very long. Good thing too, I really don't have room.[:p] Don't know who Bought it but it seemed decent from the pictures (not that you can really tell). I'll keep my eye open for it on the summer car circuit.
