Backing Up

I mentioned this before when I pushed the car back in the garage after washing it last year.
When I would push it back wards it would stop suddenly.
I think a couple of things were discussed for causes and effects.
Now that I am driving it I drove out of the garage forward and then tried to back into another stall where the lift is and it stopped short ([:D] Seinfeld reference) Tried it again and ditto.
So I drove it around the block and forward into the drive to have less back up length.
It did it again .
So I just pushed harder on the go pedal to over come the stopping.
Is this the adjusters working.
Now it did sit awhile ,year, and thing rust pretty easy here...
So any help as I want to raise it up and look at what is causing this

I would think something in the rear brakes. Auto adjust shouldn't cause it as they operate only as the brakes are applied in reverse. I would take them apart (one at a time so you have a reference) and clean wire brush every thing. I like to put a thin film of brake grease on adjust threads and touching moving parts. I know brake dust will attach to it to make it thicker but you don't want things rusting in there. Just the thinnest coat as you don't want it migrating to where it shouldn't be. It sounds like something isn't quite right (assembly?) in there.

I'd start with removing the drums, easy and should give a clear indication of what's wrong.
And when you have to dismantle the brakes take some reference piccies from all different parts and print them. Very helpful ...

I plan ,or at least I thinking of doing that, I redid the brakes about 4-5 years ago and I have maybe 800-1000 miles on them in that time

Sounds like you have the adjuster on backwards. As you go in reverse it is tighten the brake to the drum.

As a single leading shoe system, one shoe is leading when going backwards also.

With high friction, [like rusty drums] this may pull itself on hard.

Follow the other advice, but I'd add grinding a longer taper on the material on the part that becomes the front of the leading shoe when reversing.

It doesn't have to be too much, & do wear good lung & eye protection as you do it.

Also, check for loose bolts on the front joint of the drive shaft binging on the shifter housing.

Thanks Clay won't have to search now, And when I put it up I'll spin the rear wheels to check the drive shaft.

Oh, speaking of spinning when I had it in the air the other day I spun one of the rear tires, I thought the other should spin too?
So I went to the other side and did the same...same results.
Does it have to spin fast to get the other one to spin??

No,doesn't have to be very fast. If there is too much drag on the wheels (eg. brake shoe too close or tire jammed with block of wood) such that it is greater than the drag of the spider gears it won't spin.

If you put it in gear and turn a wheel it will turn the other one. If it is in neutral, it takes the easiest path, which is usually turning the tailshaft...unless you have a LSD.

It will take the easiest path in neutral. If the brake shoe is too tight it will not turn. Mine are just touching the drum putting a slight drag on it (as it should be) and it will turn the wheel and the drive line as the motion is split between the two. It has the standard type of lube plus some STP.

They spin very freely in neutral, and if one spins, the other doesn't

Un due one end of the drive shaft and try pushing the car backwards. If it binds again, then you start with the rear brakes/differential. (gears in differential)

If it doesn't bind, drop the whole drive shaft, start the car and put it in reverse. Let out the clutch. If it binds now, it is the transmission. Remember that the bolt holes on the front end of drive shaft are not drilled at 90 degree intervals so you can't mix up the front and rear end of the drive shaft.
