2805 miles from here routing through Des Moines to spend a night at my brother's and Louisville for a night at my dad's. It would be an epic road trip right up there with the 11,500 mile loop I did of the western states in my TR6 on leave from the Air Force when I was in my early 20s. I doubt if my old body could handle it now even if the car could. It's nice to dream though.[|)]

The State of Alaska isn't a very flexible employer. I'm about ready to retire anyway; this may be the incentive I need

The employers in the UK aren't that hot, either. I quit to do the Mongol Rally!

While I would go at the drop of the proverbial hat the problem is getting my sister to look after the cats that long as, although she took early retirement, she still works the odd day at Children's Hospital in Vancouver. One of the cats has a delicate stomach and is on a tight complex feeding schedule that is impractical to ask neighbors to take on.

There are lots of iconic sights I'd like to see on the trip and I do like road trips (remember my San Diego one?). I always make the efforts to hit the high points, an example is after hearing of all the people who had been to Paris and none of them had climbed the Eiffel Tower I made sure I climbed it when I was there. When I was in Sedona I made sure I saw Montezuma's Castle since I remembered seeing it in grade eight geography book and I made sure I saw the Kennedy Space Center when I was in Orlando. What I can't understand is people who go to Costa Rica and never never leave the hotel bar or go to Hawaii and never leave the beach in front of the hotel (yes, I know people like that).

OK, I talked with Jim TenCate, the President of TWOA, so I have a few thing to talk about.

First, we did raise the funds to bring Mr. Mann to the convention! Yea!

Second, if you are in England and you really would like to come, TWOA will do it's best to match you up with a driver/car so you will have transportation at the convention. A co-pilot, as it were.

However, we will need a complete list of people who are coming. It will take a lot of coordination to get people matched up with cars, so the sooner we know, the easier it will be to provide this service.

E-mail me!

From Jack Mc, President of VTR:

Jack Mc
Subject: Re: [Wedge] Dobson hotels

Hold on a minute! Read this before you call The Surry Inn.

There are 3 host hotels for the 2014 VTR National convention - all 3 offer the
same special rate of $99 (plus tax) per night, during the event and 2 days
before and after. I'll get back to those in a minute - first let me explain
this:
There is no big convention type hotel in the scenic rural area where we are
hosting this event, so most convention activities are not taking place at the
hotels.

Event Registration, a tech session, Autocross and Hillclimb Tech Inspections,
Marty's Brew Swap III, and the Photo, Craft, and Model Contests will take
place at The Hampton inn and Suites Dobson and that hotel is the nearest to
Shelton Vineyards - site of the TSD Rally start, the Funkhana, The Panoramic
photo, and the car show.

The Welcome Reception, Judges School, a tech session, the Back to Mayberry
Barbeque and Auction, and the Autocross will all take place on the campus of
Surry Community College in Dobson.

The other 2 host hotels are across the street from each other in Mt Airey, NC.
They are:
Hampton Inn Mt Airey - 336 789-5999
Holiday Inn Express Mt. Airey - 336 719-1731
Trailer parking for both of those hotels is right next to The Holiday inn
Express. You must call these hotels directly and mention The Triumph Club event to get
the special rates.

The Surry Community College convention venues are 9.5 miles from the Mt Airey
hotels and 4.8 miles from the Hampton Inn and Suites Dobson - so everything is
closer to the Dobson hotel EXCEPT the awards banquet and possibly the Hill
Climb. Cross Creek Country Club (banquet site) is closer to Mt Airey. We won't
be able to confirm our Hill Climb site until this summer, but our first choice
is MUCH closer to Mt Airey.

To meet the challenge of hosting such a spread out event, we have arranged for
three 13 passenger vans to shuttle attendees between all 3 host hotels and the
different venues all day, every day of the event and we will have at least 2
buses (full size air conditioned tour-type buses) to transport attendees to
the banquet. Nobody has to drive to or from the banquet.

BTW TCOC (host club) has encouraged its members to book rooms in Mt Airey so
as not to monopolize the registration hotel in Dobson - most have done so.

Cheers,

Jack Mc

I'm still planning to drive from Oregon, but it depends on getting some work completed on the car before summer. And I expect Dolly to come with me if I can get the car air conditioned! There's an outfit in Texas that builds an aftermarket AC kit for the TR6. If someone nearby has a Wedge for him to work with, he says he will develop a kit for the 7/8. See the AC post on the TR8 page.

I submitted my retirement paperwork today, effective April 30. One step of preparing for a cross-country trip. But before I retire, I'm taking my remaining vacation time and flying to Oregon next month to begin getting the TR8 ready for the trip.

Thanks Don. If we actually get this expedition underway, I'll probably carry the rosters of TWOA, VTR, and the 6-Pack, too. I'm hoping some other folks from Portland might be going.

Ken, I'd love to go. I just doesn't look like it will be possible though. Still, I'd like to escort you out of Portland to get you started on your way. Let me know when you are heading out and I'll try to be there.

Jim,
I'm still saying IF I go, but I'll probably leave right after the ABFM. It would be great to have an escort out of town as long as you're not brandishing shotguns! Have you heard rumors of other PTOA folks thinking about going?

Congrats on your pending retirement. Leaves a whole lot of time to work on our wedges. You will never be so busy probably because the length of time a job takes is determined by how much time you have.
