A New Thread Only for Technical Articles.

Postby Workshop Help » 02 Mar 2014 12:24

I have opened this for the purpose of discussing a new area strictly for technical articles we have composed on the TR7.

Yes, I will volunteer to sort thru my compositions to move and/or copy them from their current buried location to the new designated area. Most all of mine are in the 'TR7' topic line.

If we are to have a dedicated area, superfluous conversations must be discouraged or moved to an appropriate topic area. Otherwise, the technical articles will be again covered over as they are now.

That said, the article thread should retain the ability to query for clarification and debate. Just because something is carved in stone doesn't mean a typo or an 'oopsie' can't occur.

I always thought the TR7 section was for technical questions/discussions and General Wedge chit-chat was for everything else (not covered by other sections). I suppose we could have a technical Technical section but it would seem to muddy the issue of what is technical and what is technical Technical and who decides? The moderators I'm sure have enough to do with family/work/life/hobbies. Not against it, just playing devil's advocate.

Yes I agree. It would be good to have a whole section of how to do each job.

WE did have something like that on the founding website, but that's now gone.

It would overcome the fact that the search is difficult for us less gifted computer users.

I have always preferred to use the 'TR7' page for my articles and very much appreciate them being placed in the 'Sticky' section. However, the 'Stickies' are now crowding out the latest entries. This applies also to the 'General Wedge' page.

With our increasing accumulation of true technical articles, can we concede the need for a dedicated page for them? This way run-of-the-mill questions can remain in the pages that apply to them. Items like posters would apply to the General Wedge page while queries as to engine timing can be on the TR7 page. Of course, TR8 topics will land on their page. But, specific articles composed for instructional purposes must not have their page polluted by unrelated threads, thus giving the Moderators the duty to keep that page clean by moving those unrelated threads to an appropriate page.

Is this a lot of work for our grossly overpaid Moderators? Not if the authors of the technical articles are the ones to do the grunt work of delving into their articles to move them to the new page.

Obviously difficult to change the format if JAY is not around but it is possible to add stickies. Apologies for not being too computer literate but can a 'sticky' have 'sub-stickies'? If so, there could be one 'Technical How To..' sticky with subsections for Engine, Transmission, Body etc and the threads pates under. Not sure if this makes sense or is possible, but if it could be done it would reduce the 'sticky' section at the head of the section.

As my memory can be a bit slippery, was the 'Member's Blog' page an original part of the forum or a recent add-on?

Is there an unused or seldom used page that could be sacrificed for conversion to a new Technical Articles page?

I don't like to spend money or effort when one doesn't have too.

Let's not get our feathers ruffled here over paychecks. My remark was a sarcasm for humors sake, not an invitation to a brawl.

This thread of conversation was started as one of our Moderators, Ron, mentioned, "We can create a new thread for this off topic discussion, so not to disturb this excellent thread please.", at the end of my most recent article that was reposted as a 'Sticky'.

My interpretation is a new page(?) can/may/might be created for technical articles, which is the interest of several of our family members. We could name it; 'The Parking Lot', or 'The Shade Tree', or 'The Back Alley', or even 'The Machine Shed'. Whatever the assembled masses here is happy with. I do think there are enough articles buried in the vaults of this Forum to populate such a new page for the benefit of everyone.

I like the idea myself based on the opinions of Mildred and Whiteviro.

I know how to add a new "technical article area" if the general opinion favors such a section , therefore creating our own workshop manual so to speak.
For the logistics of searching though 100's of pages in the archives in order to fill the "new" area , I'd prefer the original posters of the purely tech threads to move their works into this section.

I'd also like those articles to stay on topic as much as possible to keep the section as reference material.
To answer the "muddy" question , it would be solely for "how to do it yourself topics".
I'd like the model specific (ie Tr7/8/sprint ect) "questions, conversations and misc ramblings"(technical or not) to stay in their appropriate sections, and use the general wedge chat and off-topic for the non-specific daily posting.

***** Lets get some feedback from more of the members who have not yet posted in this thread, I'd like to start planning the project soon.

Thanks

Ron.

Hi Ron,

As you know sounds good to me and to echo you makes sense to keep it ' how too posts ' rather than pages of discussion, that could be done in the applicable sections. There is one or two U Tube How Too video's out there that can be linked to in this section, that are either directly applicable or can be of use to everyone.

Cheers John

I agree with Silver on the general approach. We may have to just try it for a bit and see what comes out.

The great thing about this forum is that someone else will always have a better idea of how to do something, so people should be able to add their comments or suggestions once a write-up has been posted, as long as they help make it a better post.

It appears the assembled masses have no interest in this topic to improve their lives.

We're having an election year over here and the political ads feature all in a 30 second spot; family, guns, trucks down on the farm, conservative values, anti-Washington dogma, and the opposing candidate is ugly with bad breath.

Is this the kind of approach this thread needs to generate opinion and involvement? Must we display the gratuitous cleavage of JClay or some come hither glances from Whitenviro? Must my old millinery be thrown into a ring to get some attention from our family members?

People, please, we need your input.

I'm all for having an area dedicated to technical articles and "how-tos".

This forum is loaded with helpful information - but it has to be found via the Search button. If an area was set aside for technical articles, improvements, etc... it would be a great convenience.

Mildred - thanks for bringing the idea to light. I sure hope it happens.

The threads would as always stay open for comment , in these threads I'd just want them to stay on topic !
(and I know first hand how easy it is for me to go off-topic quickly, which is partly why I DON'T enforce the policy too strictly on the forum)

I agree, I think this is a very good idea, particularly as I find the search option can sometimes be a bit "cumbersome".

Nice one Mildred.
