Ranex Rustbuster

In the past I have always used POR 15 and been very happy with the results. Being here in Australia I have been thinking of getting some more. I was down bunnings the other day and I noticed they sell a rust converter product called Ranex Rustbuster.

I like the idea of this as I eant to be able to buy a product over the counter. Has anyone used this and if so how have you found it, is it any good?

Yes, I've used it, it's basically phosphoric acid, the idea is you brush off any loose rust and paint this stuff on, the rust affected metal goes black. You can rinse off the residue and paint over it.
Would I use it on a car? Well, I might use it on a sh!theap, but not on a car I cared about.
There is nothing like doing the job properly.

This stuff is the sort of thing you would use on wrought iron gates or some such.

Like any acid from Coke to fermented molasses it will convert rust to a black oxide that can be flushed/brushed off. Don't know why Cobber wouldn't use it. I personally like to use POR-15'S Metalready which gets rid of rust and leaves a zinc coating. I believe it is acidic as it has a little bite to it on open cuts. POR-15 should be applied to a surface that is roughed up by sandblasting or prepared with Metalready for maximum adhesion. It's a bit expensive perhaps but I use it sparingly. Not sure were you get your POR-15 from but I just get mine in town at local auto parts store (small community).

Oh yes I have always found that there are two camps on this. It would be nice to cut it out, but at the moment that is not an option, but hopefully will be down the line. When using POR 15 in the past I have had good results and it still looks like it is doing a good job, 3 or so years down the line.

Just wondered if anyone had used the Rustbuster product and had any views on it. I know POR 15 is tue common one here but wondered.

FYI, there is a range of Australian made products that mirrors the POR 15 range. I've used the tanks sealing kit & bought it cheaper than the equivalent POR 15 kit.

The tank kit product looks very similar to POR-15's and may work just as good. It is cheaper than POR-15 (with price in Australia versus POR-15's price in Canada using currency conversion). It may work very well. On the one hand considering the trouble of doing it (taking tank out, welding in bung for drain hole) you only want to do it once. On the other hand once you do do it it will last the life (your life) of the car for either product I suspect. The initial sealer that was in the tank didn't hold as it eventually flaked off (I don't know when it was done). If I lived in Australia I would try their stuff on other components and see how it compared to POR-15.
