Gear Lever Console removal

Starting to remove some items to get the carpet replacement project going. Working on the removal of the console. Got everything off including the brake handle, which was a ba&@$/:rd to get off. Finally PB blaster loosened it up.

How does the console lift off. I followed the manual and it says to just lift off after the brake handle is removed. The brake lever is still in the way. Is there a trick to this?

Remove the gear shift knob.
Remove the leather cover on top of the console.
Remove the rubber boot and metal trim.
Remove the spherical cover over the gear shift ball by removing the 10mm bolt.
With a heavy screw driver leverage the two straight springs off the pins in the gear shift lever ball and lock them under the two bolt heads to the sides.
WRAP A SHOP TOWEL AROUND THE GEAR SHIFT BALL AND PINS!!
While holding the towel around the bottom of the gear shift lever, shift into neutral.
While still holding the towel tightly around the bottom of the lever, pull the lever straight up.
Retrieve the anti-rattle spring and plastic plunger from the shop towel. These two parts are made from Unobtainium, so don't lose them!
Remove ALL the screws holding the console.
Tip and turn the console 90 degrees counter clockwise.
Lift straight up.

I have been able to remove the console without removing the shift lever or the hand brake lever but it is tricky. Once the shift knob is removed, remove the boot which snaps to the console with plastic fateners. Remove the screw holding down the console. Now comes the tricky part. By working the console around so it is 90 degrees to its original position, you can get it to clear the hand brake. Some minor bending of the console may be required to clear the handle so be careful not to break it. Also you may need to hunt around with the gear selector until you get the best clearance. I've done this successfully several times on two different cars, but I dread doing because it definitely doesn't feel right.

You also have to gently remove the armrest console before trying to remove WKC531, after all fixings have been removed/loosened. You then have easy access to the radio console.

Thanks guys. I ended up taking the front control console off and with a little flex rotation it came out. Taking the front console off has exposed a wiring mess to the radio. The previous owner used residential wire lock nuts for all of the connections [xx(]. Add that to the list.

Hi Kermit,

The other thing you could do is unclip the handbrake cable at one of the rear wheel clevis pins which will allow you to lift the handbrake lever up higher.

Or having taken out the cubby box / centre armrest you should be able to turn the console round a little to make it easy to get out.
