Transmission issues

I have an 80 TR8 (5 speed LT77).

Starting a few months ago, I sometimes have problems getting into 3rd gear. It only happens when I go from 2nd to 3rd, and never from 4th down to 3rd. It might be a little worse when cold, but can still be a problem after it has warmed up. I would guess this is an issues around 10% - 20% of the time I go up into 3rd.

It does not grind, or make any noise. The stick shift simple will not go to where 3rd should be. If I cannot “findâ€￾ 3rd, I can put it in 4th or 5th without even releasing the clutch, I can then put it in 3rd with no problems.

I use Pennzoil synchromesh fluid, and I have changed the fluid since this started happening. There was a little swarf on the drain plug when I changed the fluid, but I wouldn’t call it excessive.

My first guess would be a synchro, but I am not a tranny expert.

Do I have a transmission rebuild in my future, or could this be something simple?

Hi Rob,

Any change in the feel or engagement point of the clutch?

How are the shifter bushings? Is there any appreciable play if you try to lift the shift lever up and down?

It really sounds like it might be a transmission problem, though.

Clutch feels the same.

I have never messed with the shifter bushings. I have not noticed an extra play in the lever. I will see tonight if there is any up/down play, but at this point I would say this is none.

Sounds like you need to change the fluid to the Synthetic type. You might still have some ATF in it from day one.

I tried the synthetic oil but it's too slippery, syncromesh worked better. If your syncros are up to snuff it may work but sounds like that's not the case here.

What happens with the gear lever when you put it in neutral?
Does the lever sit in line with the third gear position?

yes - when in neutral, it is in line with 3rd.

The rubber bushes don't have to be messed about with, they disintegrate with age to the point of falling off. The remote housing can then move around on the gearbox making shifts difficult. It happened to mine.

So I have order shifter bushing from Woody's.

I still suspect it is the sychro, but I figured I would try changing the bushing first.

Is there a write up / photos / video out there anywhere on how to change them out?

If you are a TWOA member, there is a good writeup in one of the newsletters from a couple of years ago.

I did mine from the top (from inside the car), others have done it from just the bottom, or a combination of the two.
