Hi All
A couple of months ago I bought the waxstat conversion kit from robsport, Fitted and all seemed to be well. However after a couple of weeks running rough on tickover when warm I have found that Carb one jet is staying down when choke put back in. Looking carefully at the brass looking jet when fully down I can see score marks on the outside. If I push the bottom of the jet upwards it clicks back.
Anyone had this fault? If so how did you rectify the problem?
I will order a replacement jet bearing kit and replace. Hoping this cures the problem then of course a re-tune AGAIN.
Any assistance would as always be appreciated.

In my experience it means a bent jet.

This usually occurs when someone has pulled a set of carbs & manifold complete, off the car, & drops them on the garage floor carrying them to the bench, & they land on the jet.

It is easy to check if the needle is bent, & if not, just replace the jet as a first attempt at cure.

Had this on my spitfire when I fitted a waxstat conversion. The cause was the lever operating jet is solid mounted and can put a slight pressure on the jet causing it to stick. A bit of fiddling with cured the problem.

I second Pete's suggestion, check the link that lowers the jet. It can be a bit fiddly and I had to have several goes to make mine operate smoothly.

Hi all
Many thanks for the replies, Yes it was the linkage, It had scored the jet and the jet bearing.
I today fitted a new bearing kit and a new jet, Yet gain re set carbs. Got very brave and went on a 50 mile plus road test, very pleased with it as well, running great. The supplied linkage which operates the choke was pulling jet to one side so I carefully bent the linkage with two pair of pliers now when I use the choke it pulls jet down as it should and jet returns when choke pushed in.
Yet again many thanks for the help.
One other point.
Suggestions why on cold start It fires up on two cylinders then comes in on four ok, Is it just a balancing issue?

Sorry Gareth, I misread your original post. I just assumed, I guess, that you were removing waxstat jets, rather than fitting them.

As for starting on 2 cylinders, I assume that it is starting on one carb feeding those 2 cylinders, or am I getting that wrong too. I assume you have balanced the suction on the carbs. If so which method did you use.

Most obvious would be just one choke is being applied. How does yours work? Is it one cable with the chokes linked, or the 2 cable type? Is it still doing it with the jets fixed, or only since the jet change?

If only one choke is being applied, that would cause the problem. Remove the dashpot & piston, then operate the choke. Are the jets both moving, & is the movement equal? Correct if not the case.

How are your valve clearances. If an inlet valve is riding, burnt out, or has very little clearance this will give the problem. When it happens you can hear a flutter in the suction hiss from the carb feeding that cylinder, when using hose in ear balancing, which will not be there in the other carb.

If this is the problem it is impossible to get the idle smooth & steady, but the car can run quite OK when driven.
Did you use the hose in ear method of balancing the suction. I have no idea what the little ball in one of those balancing machines does in this case.

Fortunately our valves & seats are hardened, & can absorb such punishment for a short while, without permanent damage, if corrected. I know of one 7 that ran with a riding valve for at least a couple of thousand kilometers, & did not require a head off repair. It happily did thousands of Kilometers after correction without trouble.

You was 100% correct, I assumed that the choke applied pulled evenly on the jets as the adjusters were equal, Removed dashpots/top of carbs, applied the choke and first carb jet was hardly falling. I adjusted this so both jets were in same position. The engine started from cold on all four straight away.
Twin SU carbs with single choke cable Is the setup, went to work in car today started from cold on all four at 8.30am, car running well and started from cold on all four at 18.30 this evening, Once again Hasbeen, Many thanks.
