windscreen washers...weedy..wimpy..barely wet

Postby bonnietiler » 14 Jan 2014 14:16

I have been outside and like Oates...I was gone for some time...My windscreen wipers were a touch creaky and shall we say somewhat intermittant...but they worked...
I removed same and WD40'd them vigourously and they have improved, clearly they though need a full strip down etc...But what of my Winscreen washers...Oh dear oh dear...the jet, despite its tortuous, serpentine route, just about reaches the screen...with a cough and a splutter...If It was human...it's be down at Dr Jellyfingers as we speak, having the old Bend down, touch your toes let's see which way the wild goose goes, Prostate examination...It is that weak, the plastic pipes seem OK the filter isn't blocked, the pump "looks" new...any thoughts..is there a Super Whizzo mega-powerful torrent-streamer pump available?

The washers should work well - try taking the filter off (or at least the strainer out) and see what that does.

Give the jets a good clean too. If this is no good it may mean that you need a new pump - they are just a universal jobby and can be had for not too much off the net (ie less than £8) see:

Stick a needle in the jets and clear them out, but it is probably the pump. Mine made all the right noises, but wouldn't pump at all. You can unscrew the housing and play around with the impeller, but it will still most likely be weak. It's a cheap part and easy to install. Replace the well nuts in the firewall with new soft ones and the pump will seem a lot quieter too.

Also worth taking the pump apart and cleaning out the impeller. When mine was left for 6 months the washer fluid turned to a sort of jelly. Had to flush out the lot from strainer to jets but worked OK after.

I had the "jelly" too. Cleaned out the pump (took it apart). Clean electrical contacts as if there is a oxidation/corrosion it won't be getting the full "juice". I replaced my hoses as they were a little yellow, you can get the different sizes at your local hardware store and/or the local pet shop (aquarium supplies). Attach a string to the hose before you pull out the old one that goes through the bonnet so you can pull the new one back the same way. Cleaning the nozzles with pin is the quick and dirty way, taking them off and squirting some soap/vinegar etc. solution through them to flush them out is better. If your tank is yellow you can soak it in Javex over the winter to bleach it clear (this applies to any of the plastic containers like master brake reservoir as well. Takes months for that though. Javex plus sunlight. Went from enlarged prostate dribble to just like new.

On 2 of my 7s the washer hose would rattle down between the bonnet & the reinforcing pressing over about 6 months. This would mildly squeeze the hose, reducing it's internal diameter only a little, but enough to reduce the flow to a useless spit.

Not being one to rush into things, after a few years, I finally remembered this minor annoyance, when I had a tube of Sikaflex urethane sealant, in the gun & open. Just 3 small dobs of Sikaflex had the hose secured, or the tapering gap it rattled down into, blocked off to prevent it happening.

If it happened to me on 2 cars, why not you too?
