Turn Indicators

The turn indicators on my car don't reset themselves. The previous owner put an early pre 79 right hand side indicator on my 80 TR8.

This is what is on the car:

Do I have to scrap this and get a post 79 left hand side one to make it work correctly?

From what I understand, either switch will work.


I had similar issues in the past.

FYI - from the picture in that post, the ball bearing / spring go directly below the spot where the pointed plastic w/spring goes.

First things first. We do not ever scrap TR7 parts. They go in the box of spares for use or sale at a later date.
Second thing is, are the connectors the same? If so, it should work.

RJS - That sounds right as most of the big suppliers list both parts as working in the late models. Any idea why it is not resetting?

Perhaps a spring is not set correctly.

Mildred - I had to spend the recent winter break organizing all of the parts that have been compiled over the years. Need a bigger garage.

I hate to say this, but open it up and look inside.

Make sure you are somewhere where you will not loose the parts.

When you open it up, hold the base level, and lift up the metal part (it will come up like it is hinged because one end is held down).

In the second picture down (and fourth pic), there is a piece with white "catches" sticking out. The black hollow piece follows the steering column, and has a piece sticking out that will push the white "catch" back to center when it turns.

My guess is either the white catches are broken, or the springs pushing down on the ball bearing and pointed plastic are too strong so the pressure on the catches is not enough to press it back to center.

If the part holding the white catch is broken, let me know. I am pretty sure I have another.

Also, I know that both version have the same plug.

Hang on a minute just let me get this straight in my mind here.

Being in the US you have a LHD (left hand drive) car.

Is it not, desirable and indeed accepted practice to operate the indicators (turn signals) with the left hand on a LHD car? Thereby keeping your right hand free to change gear.

So why on earth did Leyland change the indicators to the right hand side of the column on LHD cars?

They did the opposite here in Oz where we drive on the right (and correct) side of the car, here the pre 80 cars had the indicators on the right side of the column and then they changed them over to the other side. So on our 1980 and later RHD cars we have to indicate with the same hand we use to change gears with!

Every car I have ever seen in the US has the turn stock on the left side (including my Triumph).

It us just upside down in the picture.

Drive on the left! Drive on the right! Shift with this hand! Shift with that hand! It's all too much. My friend Mavis drives her big bomb Buick down the middle of the road, and has for years. Not only that, she has always driven while looking thru the steering wheel. She's all of 4'10" tall with a sparkling personality. Everyone in town knows to get out of her way when she goes to the store.

My 1980 Spider has the first one, on top of the blue box. That is the correct stalk for a 7, was it different for an '80 TR8?

From what I understand, all 79 and before had one style, and all 80 and after had a different one. Nothing to do with TR7 vs TR8.

My Spider has the second one, mind you I replaced it right away as the headlight dimmer wasn't working so wasn't aware if there were too types as I was new to the scene. I can't remember if it was the same or different, didn't register at the time. So if it's different they both work. It takes a larger turn of the wheel to turn signals off compared to Toyota or Acura.

Beans,
I bet that is the problem. The PO had replaced an aftermarket wheel with a TR7 wheel before I got it. The wheel is also not perfectly centered. I will pull it off this weekend to take a look. Hopefully it warms up a little.

There is a metal finger inside the hub that should be pointing down when the hub is installed properly.

Yes to Clay.

My previous owner had the hub upside down. If you have that wrong, it will not reset for left(?) turns unless to you turn extremely sharp.
