Speaking of bumpers.

Postby FI Spyder » 01 Dec 2013 23:33

Today is the last warm day (50F) for a while as it's supposed to drop down to freezing for next 10 days or so. I took off my rear bumper to touch up with POR-15 and replace the lower rubber retainer bolts and shoulder washers with stainless as that's the last thing I haven't touched yet. I was surprised how easy everything came off, either starting them with ratchet for half the other half came of by hand and socket. I was surprised everything looked like new with only a few dabs of POR-15 needed here and there and a little rust on rubber left by shoulder washers. I expected about 1/4 of the paint to be gone like the rear axle was. You got to love those California cars.

Condition of the mounting nuts/washers.

Hi,

You guy's get it too easy over there, no fun unless you are struggling with rusted nuts and bolts !!! [:p]

No seriously, amazing condition, even new old stock over here would be in worse condition !

Cheers John

It was warm out today so decided to push out the Spider and wash off the back and inside the rear frame. It was pretty good. A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer up the pants and it will be ready for reinstall. Actually there is a little surface rust on the bottom inside from about 4 inches from rear hole extending 6" forward. Not sure what I'm going to do with that yet. If I can get in there with a barbecue brush I might clean it up with Metal ready a do some remote painting with POR-15 and a toothbrush in a stick. Also some of the edges had the paint missing and a spot here and there. Once the painting is done I'll spray some waxoil in there.

Just for comparison, here is a picture of the rear bumper I took off my project car.
Oh to be in California - for the weather anyway.

Hard to get a smooth paint surfac on that.[:p]

Brushed out the rust with barbecue brush taped to wooden paint handle and some Metalready. You've got to attack taht rust like a southern preacher attacks sin with snakes and fire & brimstone.

Shot of inside rear frame before.

Hey Spyder, that looks a bit like the dark hole of Calcutta to me. I'm not going in there.

Hope everybody had good New Years. Spent my first day of the year getting rid of rust on front surface of rear bumper where the tires kick up sand. Wire brush on a drill and Metalready got it easy. Next Step POR-15.

For those of you who don't follow "active topics" I've finished this thread off in the blog section. Last thing I had to do with the car. Just a few little things left like speaker upgrade, deteriorated foam in sunvisors, etc. Mostly wash and wax now.
