Bargain tyres 185/70 13

Postby Graham Robertson » 25 Nov 2013 13:25

I still had my original five steel wheels taking up room in the garage after swapping on to Factory Alloys. Spotted this bargain on Ebay - ("Nankang" tyres for on £25 each plus £6 shipping):

So decided to give myself the option of going back to original - I do like the look of the wheels with the original wheel trims too.

Spend some time cleaning up the wheel trims and the bolts for the steel wheels:

Did a quick check and they seem to be OK except very little grip in the wet, especially on RWD cars. Just have to be careful.

Merv , one way or the other , they would still be better than some of the dry rotted tyres you see on most classics ....

Nice looking combo Graham, what did you use to paint the rims and caps ??

Got to agree with you there Ron.

The worst rubber you can have on your car is old rubber.

My steering is now back to virtually no wobble. It has taken over a thousand kilometers, & 3 weeks for the flat spots generated by sitting stationary on a cement floor for a few weeks to come out.

These are Pirelli's were probably the very best 185 70 13 available in Oz 6 years ago. I accepted tyres that were already a couple of years old, because they were still better than anything else then available in Oz.

Now at 8 years old, they are probably worse than most of the cheep stuff still supplied foe 13" wheels.

The sooner I can get my balancer going & fit new rubber the better.

Those wheels are probably stud centric Graham, so provided the tyres are still round, you should have a wheel wobble free TR7. Let us know.

Hi Graham,

Good price for a budget tyre, after all we are not exactly spoilt for choice when it come's to 13 inch tyres [V]

Wheels and trims look good, when I got mine powder coated, set up our balancer up so all the weights were on the inside and out of sight.

Cheers John

Choice for (decent quality) 185/70-13 tyres is limited over here, but not to bad @ 19. (ranging in price from €39,- to € 382,- [:0] each
Put a set of Continentals with the refurbished Wolfies on the DHC a few weeks ago @ €78,- each ...
They have decent grip (actually notably better on 6" rims compared to the original 5,5")

p.s. wheels look nice [8D]

Having some of these installed today. I'll report back on how they run.

I don't know the Firestone but they are on and I had a run with them today. On the highway they are quite enough and on the back roads with some aggressive driving I couldn't find anything to complain about. Those are the first impressions.

As a side the right front tire balanced out without any weight. I'm a bit skeptical about that as I did feel some vibration in the 65 to 70mph range. Might have to take it back for a second look. When was the last time anyone saw a tire and wheel balance with no weight added? What are the odds?

Not sure of the probability but it is likely to happen once and if it happens to you that's 100% probability (for you). Athough new tires go a long way to fixing wobble (it cured mine) there's always the dozen other things.

This vibration I get is not wobble. This car, the FHC, prior to the tire installation, was smooth as glass with ancient tires. The other car, the DHC, has wheel wobble that is incurable. I have tried about everything ever suggested in this forum and while I did improve it some it is still there. I even took the DHC wheels and put them on the FHC. No wheel wobble. So the wobble on the DHC is not coming from the wheels.

But I digress jumping from the problems of one car to the ills of the other. The vib I'm getting from the new tires on the FHC is the classic out of balance condition. We have a shop in Oregon called Les Schwab. They pride themselves in fast service. They actually run around the shop instead of walking. They run to get your car, run to get the tires, etc. But it's all show. People are impressed with all this hustle but don't realize that it promotes sloppy work. When I arrived to collect the car they had failed to the do wheel alignment I had asked for. But they did run to bring the car to me[:(]
