Hi Lawerence like you say, with the sound of the V8, who needs any other music? but i do agree with you, although its a personal preferene, ive stuck with the 1980 style radio/cassette player, i know it dont sound as good as modern in car intertainment, but it is more in keeping with the car i reckon

Here's the best pic I have of my cars original dealer installed radio, though unlike others mine has no Triumph marking on it, or any name for that matter.....

According to the sales contract, it was a no-cost extra (probably just as FISpyder had previously mentioned, only installed at point of sale to keep from being theived, though today you would question why?? lol)

I just saw this sale leaflet earlier tonight, maybe it might intrest some of you???

Most were LW ( Long Wave ) & MW (Medium Wave) Radios.
AM / FM was expensive at the time & mostly fitted to 'upper end ' cars.

They were either Unipart Branded as part of Leyland & as John said were fitted after delivery to the garages, as they were an optional extra.
Cars came with a removable plastic tray which slotted into the space -but the connections / speakers / ariels were already fitted.

Several years ago I saw an AM/FM/8-Track that came out of a TR7 (with triumph logo). I had the chance to buy it, but I was feeling cheap that day, and talked myself out of it.

I am still mad at myself over not getting that one.

This is a good topic. Some twenty five years ago, after suffering with weak reception for a long time, I was wandering thru a junk yard and saw a Motorola AM/FM radio sitting on the seat of an old VW. $5.00 and a few days later it was installed in place of the dealer installed AM/FM radio in the car.

As John said the radios were dealer fitted with the exception of the 1980 30th Anniversary Edition and the 1980 Spider which had an AM/FM stero with cassette as standard equipment. They were Panasonic but had the Triumph face plate.

In the U.K. it would have been fitted as an optional extra and more than likely dealer fitted. The 'pre equipment' fitted as standard was supplied by Radiomobile and I suspect may have been provided to B.L. at a knock down price on a loose understanding that a customer would be guided towards a Radiomobile audio. Thus Radiomobile, Motorola, Unipart, Leyland or a Triumph badged item would be fitted. These were all made by Radiomobile and iirc Radiomobile and Motorola were for a while linked companies and were made on the same production line. The Unipart, Leyland and Triumph articles were (in the U.K.) as far as I am aware simply rebranded Radiomobile items. Typically in the U.K. on a car like a TR7 a push button MW / LW radio would be fitted as a manual tuner would be considered down market (Mini / Metro type item) whereas FM stereo tuners were considered more upmarket. Notwithstanding this there was a huge diversity of audio equipment at this time so some customers would have had an a MW / LW / FM push button auto reverse stereo cassette player fitted and this could be regarded as 'original'. Of more significance is that they would invariably follow the twin spindle arrangement which was superseded in the 80's. It is my understanding that although the car had twin speakers these were not wired up for stereo. Lots of units of this era are available having been adapted for Ipod. Usually quite a few on ebay, so don't pay over the odds. supercass

If you don't want an old technology radio you can get a modern one with SD and USB to play your tunes, yet looks like an old radio other than these inputs for not much money from Pyle. At $56 it's not high end but I dare say it's better than 30 year old technology.
