Diff spreader

For those who have re-built their rear axle, did you use a diff spreader? I
Is it a must have? Is there a way round it?

Hi John,

Rebuilt loads of TR7 ( and SD1's ) and never needed to spread the diff, we had the said tool at work but I never saw it used.

Hi Don,

GW1 in the picture is an example of the sort of tool, does what it says and spreads the casing by a very small amount

Same here, after 30 years and rebuilding 00's of axle's I have never needed one.I do have the dummy pinion set up though and have only ever used that once

Here's an example in use:

The jacking screw the the bottom of the pic is turned to spread the diff housing at the two screws at the mid point of the tool. other diffs don't have threaded holes for the spreader tool they just have plain holes, for these diff the screws are replaced with dowl pins.

I have not got a spacer yet but they are available, I was in touch with a company that said they had them in stock

Nah, it's not in two pieces. It forces the two sides of the casing a bit further apart so as to make the removal and refitting of the diff center is easy.
When the pressure is released from the housing by undoing the jacking screw the housing springs back.
