Speedo cable replacement

Could someone please advise on the procedure for replacing the speedo cable.[?]

Pretty straight forward. Going from memory. Put car on jack stands. Unscrew cable from back of speedo (this can be done from under the dash without removing dash parts). Might have to remove seat to get under there but that represents an opportunity to put anti-seize on seat bolts (while 7 of my 8 seat bolts were like brand new on Spider, one was rusted in and took days to get out like acid (coke)had been spilled there to start it rusting. I hate to think how other cars are. From under the car, unscrew bolt holding fork that retains cable in the transmission. Pull out cable. When putting new cable, lubricate rubber seal with red rubber grease (found in brake rebuild kits or available separately). Any time I put in rubber seals of any sort I lubricate them so they don't abrade and leak later.

The connection to the speedo under the dash is a clip, there is a tab on the plastic housing that you press and it pulls right out.

Gareth make sure you have your eyes on, & good light down under the dash, when you want that cable out of the speedo.

I had a hell of a job with mine, the first time. I did not want to put enough pressure on old plastic. Once I'd done it the first time, the next was no problem.

I purchased a small headlight, although new to this I have now been under the dash a few times.

Just a note. The upper cable for the speedo (it attaches to a "counter" in the engine bay) comes in 2 lengths. It is a couple inches longer for the fuel injected cars. If anyone knows where I can find the longer FI version I would be obliged to know.

Fitted new inner cable this morning, Working fine. decided after reading Mildrid post to first try replacing the Inner, Great thanks Mildrid. Lubed as recommended. All 100%.
Once again thanks to all for help. Great forum great people.
The end of the cable that went into clock was rounded on edges.
