master cylinder question

Postby 195r13s » 15 Aug 2013 19:15

In USA there are no Sherpa vans. Would someone post what is it that makes those master cylinder and boosters such a popular British upgrade? The bore diameter; the piston travel?
I was hoping to match as close as possible from wide variety in Summit Racing or similar catalogue.
I'm using 15" Ford Focus wheels with larger Suzuki vented rotors and calipers (my V6 post). Rear-end is Ford with discs.
Thanks for any help with this, just trying to reduce inevitable upgrade guesswork

Have a look at this topic:

Picture of a Sherpa unit and some more discussions. Also very similar is the one fitted to the Rover SD1. Its basically a larger diameter vacuum drum and a larger bore master cylinder. The master cylinder bores vary from 22.2mm (7/8") to 25.4mm (1")
There are some issues with the length of the pushrods to get the brake pedal height correct.
All of the usual UK suppliers sell the uprated units.

If you have access to the Roger Williams book "How to Improve Triumph TR7 TR7V8 TR8" he does quite a good analysis with descriptions and some pictures.

Thanks Russ. That's the info I was missing. I'll go w 1" and see what happens.

I do have the "how to improve..." book, it's just not too helpful on brakes for us N. Americanos. Sherpa brake discussions informative. I'm trying to figure out a similar approach to brake upgrade using readily parts available here.
