Road Trip!

Postby whitenviro » 07 Aug 2013 23:17

I'm planning to take the TR7 to Triumphest this year in San Rafael California, which is about a 1,800 mile round trip. So the wife & I decided we needed to do a bit of a road trip before that, just to make sure the car was up to such a long drive.

Eight days and 1,385 miles later, I can say YES!
Image

Started highway driving to Portland, Oregon for a crawfish boil.

Image

Then off the Interstate, to the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood (where the outdoor parts of the Jack Nicholson movie The Shining were filmed).
Image

A day of whitewater rafting,
Image

Then south through the high desert to Crater Lake.

After that, over the Cascades and back home following the coast.

Average mileage: 27 mpg
Oil used: 0
Coolant: 1 pint

The only big mechanical problem started a few days into the trip. After the car was hot the trans did not like going into reverse without grinding gears. After that, every day it was the same; it shifted fine when cold, but didn't want to go in reverse after it warmed up. I suspect the plastic clutch hose may be softening up, but have been concerned about the state of the clutch. I hoped to make it through the season without having to change it, but it might have to happen before Triumphest.

Two other minor irritants; the washer pump made all the right noises, but won't pump. Not even when disconnected with a clear suction tube. The other thing was a popper that pulled out of the trim behind the passenger door, so the front of the hood had to be held in place with a cable tie when the top was up. Pretty minor stuff.

On the whole a fun trip!

Love those long trips (see my 3,000+ mile trip to San Diego). Oil used zero, coolant 0, no idea of mileage but in Santa Cruz the gas pump didn't flick off and sent gas all over the trunk. Fortunately the wax job protected the paint. Only problem was top nut of MacPherson strut came loose, my bad, used anti seize grease rather than Loctite.

Been to Timberline twice, up for shrimp anytime, always wanted to see Crater lake, not too sure about whitewater rafting but probably could be talked into it.[:p]

Hey!

I was thinking about you today! I have my flight arranged and my hotel set for Triumphest/VTR. I guess I will meet you there.

I know that Monica and Jim TenCate are also coming.

Looks like great fun. I love those long trips too.

I have yet to find a better car for these trips. I can still walk, & enjoy going out to dinner after a 1000Km days run in the 7 or 8, & there is nothing else I own or have driven recently I can say that for.

Looks like a nice run.
I must have missed you coming through Bend. TR7 are as scarce as hens teeth here. Did you see any others enroute?

Nick, I had your phone number with me just in case we had car trouble. But going through Bend it was raining and we were running late to meet friends who were coming up from Reno, so we couldn't hang around. Otherwise I would have liked to stop to meet you and see your cars. Next time you are up here, let me know.

Jclay, I'm looking forward to meeting you at Triumphest!

Looks like it was a fun trip.

You should have given us a heads up that you were coming through the 'Couve, perhaps we could have organized a "Wedge Escort" for you!

I'd like to join you for the drive down from Oregon for Triumphest, but Dolly tells me I need to stay home for my father's 94th birthday. I'm planning on heading to Wenatchee, Washington, to see my stepbrother the week before the ABFM, if it's not too hot. My brother-in-law has driven my TR8 on a couple of rallies this summer and reports it is running well.

Ok, I'm inspired!
Doing a Wednesday to Monday trip to Portland from Victoria through Port Angeles and down the outside of the peninsula.
After seeing your visuals I'll have to do a Iphone report.
Been tuning any issues out of the car and looking forward to a great drive.

I am tickled that you and Dana are coming down and I'm so excited to see you both!
Will you be caravanning with the Tyee group? Where will you be staying? Several of us will be staying at the Four Seasons Sheraton. I will be picking Clay up and we will be driving in on Wednesday the 2nd. Give me a call once you two are settled in.
What a fun drive you had! Beautiful scenery, adventure, and yummy mudbugs! Great reassurance that your gorgeous 7 will do just fine on its trek to Cali. Can't wait to share a glass or two of wine with you guys! See you soon! Huggz for Dana--now it's a party!!! LOL

<font size="3">My road trip was only about 500 miles, from Forest Grove, Oregon, to Yakima, Washington, and back, with some side trips. But gave me a little confidence in my car again, after the fuel and ignition problems I had last year.
