windscreen trim installation

I've found lots of help with regards to removal of the trim piece; although I've removed a few sets in my time. The issue I have is how to install them. The painter neglected to install the trim items, or leave enough room for an interference fit of the trim all the way around. He has used great amounts of black urethane, I believe, to secure and seal the windscreen in place. It does not leak and appears quite close to centred.

Should I use an easily removable product like clear exterior window calking to secure the trim in place in case of later windscreen replacement, or are there better ideas out there?

I used the polyurethane I stuck the glass in with,might be a bit of a sod to remove though.
A black silicone sealant should do the job but make sure you have enough tape to hold it in place while the sealant sets,I found that was the hard part.

Be careful of that trim, it's made of unobtanium.

In Oz we now use a never set goo for windscreens. When my mine was replaced, the trim was simply pushed into this stuff. A month or 2 later it started to come out, making a bid for freedom at 70 MPH. Fortunately it was the drivers side & I caught the thing before it parted company completely.

Result, car & my right hand/arm covered is cobweb type threads of very sticky black goop. Took hours to clean up.

To prevent a similar occurrence I then glued the trim in with lots of Sikaflex [urethane] sealant.

Result, that was the only bit not stripped in my bare metal respray. the painter was not prepared to guarantee it would be fit for use again after removal, & neither was I. Pity, but I can live with that.

If ever I do another I will make sure the area behind the trim is well protected, & has no water traps, then fix the trim to the glass only with urethane sealant.
