My cars History...?

Postby mrpatatomoto » 13 Nov 2011 08:20

Has anyone found a way to find out PO info on US cars? I've read that with UK cars you can go through DVLA and get some info, but most things I can find say if its pre 85 there's no info for you. Not that its really important, but I'm the kinda person that likes to know useless information (not that its all useless, for all I know I could find something important)

Thanks,
Mike

Can't help you but can appreciate the sentiment of knowing the history of your car. I traced down the previous owner of Spider from the last registration slip (got with car as I bought it from some one who was flipping it) through searching on the internet and eventually got an email address. I made arrangements to look her up when coming back through Sacramento last summer and had a good talk on it's history (she had it from 1985). The most surprising thing is the seats (that look like new) were recovered when she got it in '85. The second was that it only failed her once when it lost power on the highway. It was the transmission (don't know really if it was transmission or clutch, would have loved to see the bill).

Yellow TCT is a local car initially owned by the mother-in-law of the guy I bought it from who had it for four years. At 30,000 miles it doesn't have any history. [:p]

Yeah, I love the color, I just wish it didn't have a dent in the front panel. I don't have any other good ones at the moment, but I will take more once I get it on the road again. I bought it from a guy who was trying to start a lot so he didn't have any info on it. But it barely ran when I got it, (cant remember the year on the plates when I got it)

Thanks,
Mike

In California you used to be able to go to the DMV site and get the history on emissions checks for cars, just enter the license plate number.

I am also pretty sure that you can do a title history request if you are the current owner.

Mike

http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/ ... -services/

This will give you the build dates/specification etc. It will also give the dispatch date and usually the receiving dealer. Is this the sort of info your after?

Just ordered a "Heritage Certificate". Am I correct in assuming that with my supplied VIN they will be able to provide all the other important numbers and info? I'm just wondering is this a fancy printout of info that I provide, or is it actual data from records that they provide? Wish they had an option to just email me the info!

The Heritage Certificate is a copy of the info contained on the actual factory build record (which I believe is like an index card).

Usually that will include original colour & trim, build date, destination when dispatched from the factory, original key numbers, engine (& sometimes gearbox) numbers, factory fitted equipment (like the heater [:)]) and if there is any other info recorded then they will add that to the certificate.

It looks rather nice in an A4 frame [:)]

That's what I was hoping! It will be nice to have something historical in writing.

I have the original window sticker that was on the car in the show room (as well as the original manuals that came with the car). Can't get better than that other than maybe the original bill of sale from the dealer. Can't have everything.[:p]

I almost have it all, Merv... I have the original bill of sale, the original manuals that came with the car, and a window sticker that John Manske was sweet enough to doctor up for me from his original. :-)

Doesn't tell you an awful lot then for the fee that they charge. I'm surprised that the body number wasn't recorded. supercass
