Advice on picking a body shop.....

Hi All,

I have a late drophead which needs some renovation. I have all the panels ready to fit but I'm looking for recommendations for a knowledgable TR7 body shop somewhere in the South East UK. Can anyone help please?

I don't know how expensive they might have been - insurance co picked up the bill.

Thanks Gordon,

I suspect it may be the same garage that Simon got to come and quote me about 3 years ago. The chap turned up in his own Mercedes which he'd just resprayed....I looked at his work whilst he looked at my TR7. His paintwork was awful, a good depth of paint, but covered in orange-peel and a couple of big drips. When he then estimated "around five grand" just to paint my TR, my mind was made up!

Sounds like it hadn't been flattened yet (as you say in UK) or as we say in N/A wet sanded and polished.

Hi,

I recently went for a job at a local classic car restorer's Had two intreviews and was offered the job but due to differences in wages had to turn them down [:(][:(][:(] However both time got a chance to look at the work they do and can only describe as first class, real craftsmen plus got there own spray shop, they had a Healey being sprayed and the finnish was glass like and flawless. The boss, Warren, a real enthusiast who gets his hands dirty too and compared with labour rates where i work now very reasonable. Dont be put of by the high end cars on there site as he is doing a VW Beetle at moment and MGB ect. Just of M1 at junction 13. They are also TR Register recommended

My advice would always be to talk to your local club folks and ask them who they use. No substitute for seeing the work and talking to someone who actually paid for it. If they still recommend somewhere its likely to be OK.

<font color="green">No idea whether it was the same firm or not, no way of knowing, but it certainly does not sound anything like the standard of the work they did on my car which I am still happy with after a few years. If you are anywhere near Bedford you are more than welcome to come and look at the work they did anytime. Just let me know.

I certainly quizzed the chap about his car, and it was finished, and he was quite proud of it!

That other restorer in Milton Keynes is another possible then, thanks. I'll negotiate rates on my friends recovery truck and try and get to two or three paint shops in a day for some comparative quotes.......
