My fuel gauge reads full but the low fuel light came on

silly I thought the gauge was correct

nope ran out of fuel today [:I]

can you take the sender out without lowering the tank?

I cant remember.

Pretty sure you can get it out steve without moving the tank. Just remember the sender will be full of fuel even it the tank was empty. Not a nice job.

Stevie,

You can take out the tank sender without removing the tank. If the gauge is reading full maybe your two wires have been swopped over so circuit is not going through the resister in the sender?

Not a nice job, its helps if the front is higher than the back so the fuel towards the back of the tank. I always think my tanks empty and I usually fill up two / three fuel cans.

Driving around for days with the tank always full has got to be the ultimate definition of an optimist.[:D]

When I removed my tank I drove it until the low fuel light came on. With the car up and level I removed the sender, no problem.

Don't think it is the wires as the car was fine when it went into the garage for the winter

If the gauge reads full, you probably have a short some where. I would look at the top of the driveshaft tunnel at the rear bulkhead, right where the wires go into the cockpit at the rear of the console.

I am assuming that if the low fuel light is working, then it is getting that info from the sending unit, so I would think that the problem is somewhere else.

I have the same problem, gauge reads full, if I disconnect the wire from the sender unit it reads empty, re connect it reads full, new sender unit did not fix it either.

When my gauge read full all the time I checked the connections on the sender but was all OK. I changed the gauge to cure it, been fine ever since.

Stevie,

For the fuel gauge to show full when the tanks empty the Green/black cable to your sender must be going down to body earth.

You can quickly chek the fuel sender by unplugging the Green / black cable at the fuel tank sender, if the gauge shows low then its the sender unit internals. With the gauge showing full deflection the gauge is working ok.

If the gauge is still shows full, it must be going to earth, so need to check the wire run underneath along the gearbox area first, etc. Hopefully just the cable needs repair.

The only other option is to fill the car up and carry on till the low fuel light comes on and go to fuel station. suggest also carry some fuel in suitable container.

My gauge works - goes up and down more or less as it should when fuel goes in or out, but the tell-tale low fuel light is kaput. Ran out of fuel with the gauge showing just under a quarter-tank yesterday.... or, put another way, just above empty!

I think it is going to earth in the dash as my alarm had to be replaced also before I put the car on.

I hope I did not have a visit from my little friends the mice.
