The block is from the Golden Wonder Works V8 run by Ken Wood in the Scottish rally championship.

From memory they were referred to as thick wall 4 bolt main blocks.

The internal 4 bolt design may have been something to do with homologation, but think it also existed in the Works TR7's as well.

I used a home made version of this works design in my TR7 rally car with an additional strap over the main bearing caps to create a 4 bolt design from a standard block.

Hi Troy,

I've got a rally spec. TR7V8 that was 95% built by a long-term race and rally car builder/driver (he raced works Datsuns/Nissans, and built a lot of race cars). It is a Speke built 1977 car that was ziebart from new and in good condition.

It was prepared by experienced engineers, and he brought in guys he knew from roll cage manufacturers who supplied and installed the full cage (and turrent linked), and his friend from Quaife to supply the axle and diff. He also had a professional electrician who did all the 'plumbing'.

He also used Samco hoses, full disc brake, AR3 & AR5 calipers (historic spec.), Escort Group N suspension, rose-jointed adjustable links, coil-over suspension all round. And olds more. Can be seen at www.triumph-cars.co.uk

I'm not an expert but can help based on what I have.

Hi Troy,

I have a copy of the origanal FIA homolagation papers for TR7 V8, there is a picture showing AP Lockheed front calipers not a particular good picture though

The works cars all ran AP brakes front and rear.

The early rear calipers on solid discs were a Formula 2 front Caliper part number CP2383

The later rear vented disc set-up added hand brake levers to the CP2383 with a spacer to make the caliper wider.

The front forest calipers were from memory CP 2361. I have a pair I can photograph for you if needed.

Hi Hugh,

Any picture's from your collection of rally parts are always great to look at [8D]

Whilst on the subject of your collection, do know if the push rods for the adjustable rockers were be-spoke items or from another vech ? I have a set of these rockers on my 4.6 and use a modular push rod but not 100% happy with these. I guess your solid lifter set up push rods are longer than my hydraulic set up, mine is based around a set of a SD1 Twin Plenmun group A homolagation set. But as your's Volvo Amazon type.

Hi all
I have heard many time that the last factory cars had the wheel base increased. Is there any truth to this ,or is it an urban legend ? If they are longer, how much?

Don't remember the Works cars having a significantly increased wheelbase, but I moved my front wheels forward by 3" and the rear wheels back by 3".

The front strut turrets were cut in half and moved forward giving the option to have the strut tops forwards or in the original position

So what was the advantage of doing so?

Did they run the cars then with the strut tops forward or back depending on the tyre of event? Has anyone got any pictures of the modified inner wings? 3" is a fair old shift!!
